Names you dislike/don't get?

I dont like 'ee' where a 'y' would've done - Kaylee, Aimee etc.

I'm not a fan of Florence or Darcy either, I know they're popular and I know some lovely little girls with those names, I just don't like the way they sound. Not big on American sounding boys names like Tyler, Taylor etc either.

I really liked Riley for a girl because there's a bit of a family backstory there, but the name itself seems to have such chavvy connotations now that I couldn't bring myself to it ☹

I don't get the appeal of Amelia either, or Olivia. I think they will be the Sarah /Nicola of their generation

@Ribbonsonabox I have a Teddy. He's 12 and a lovely, well behaved boy. He's not a campus rapist and he's not tried lager yet.

I honestly can't understand why people call their dd's Amelia. Yes, it sounds pretty but do people not look up the meaning of names before they use them? And it's so popular!

Hey again as standard hyphenated names comes up. I have a hyphenated name, it's not a bad thing and beats a middle name I never ever use.

I have 2 strikes so far - DD1 has a hyphenated name & DS has a surname for a first name (but it does give him that elusive unique name) thankfully DD2's name is generally approved of on Mumsnet or I'd be screwed

I tend not to mind most names & don't give more than a passing at the more unusual names provided they're actual names & spelt correctly but the one name I cannot stand is Mirren - it just sounds awful to me can't quite put my finger on why but it just makes me recoil when someone says it.

DuchessOfPhysics there is a similar sort of name to that here in Scotland too

Very true. I know so many adult Steves for example. And so many young Jacks and Olivers...

Amelia and Jack are names I just don’t get. Both just meh, can’t see how they got so popular.

But then I pretty much dislike most of the top 10 boys and girls names from the last few years. I celebrate originality!

Dont get Teddy... it's really popular at the moment... I'd understand it if it were a nickname for Edward or Theodore etc but the ones I know are just called Teddy that's their actual name.... I dont know why but it just conjures up and image of a horrible lads lad... like a university campus rapist... like all those American style names like Kent and Brock and Buck.. I just immediately think sleazy dickhead drunk on larger...
I do apologise if you have a child called any of those names... it's just my personal opinion I'm sure there are many people who completely love those names.

But I am one of those weirdos who likes the name Ruth (also, Jane, Mary, Richard, Billy, Susie) so my tastes are very conservative even though my lifestyle / path isn't at all really, so that is interesting that is not interesting to anybody except me

Surnames for first names - Taylor, Mason, Harrison, Grayson, Jaxon etc

Double-barrelled names - Ava-Mai, Rosie-Rae etc

Nicknames on birth certificates - Theo not Theodore, Charlie not Charles.

Anything really that puts negative labels on a child - they should have a name that works if they become prime minister just as much as for them as a five-year-old.

I've spent too long in courts (for work) hearing the names of the accused, and the same names crop up again and again, so I always avoid those!

I'm in Ireland and I don't mind the Irish names, I really like most of them but I hate the Irish names that signify that the parents have read the ancient legends, as gaelige, and name their whole family with the most obscure underused names they can find in a dusty old scroll!

Arthur - it's awful. It's an old man name that reeks of old man and nothing could make it fresh. NOTHING. Not even every second toddler.

But still better than a hippy/pretentious name

I definitely sense a 90s theme in my list! Abigail is the one that makes me shudder the most, but I can't put my finger on why.

Names that demonstrate what kind of parent you are, like Moss and Oak just so that everyone knows you’re a tree-hugger.
I am a fully paid up veggie tree-hugger btw, but my kids have names that I thought would suit them, not ones that complement my lifestyle.

OMG yes, this. I'm also a veggie hippy-ish parebt but my kids have "normal", top 100, names as their names are for them not me. I can change my name to Bluebell or Meadow or Sunshine if I want, no need to saddle a kid with a "different" name to signify my individuality.

Along similar lines I also dislike pretentious Shakespearean, Greek (when you're not of Greek ancestry) names that are there to show off how intelligent you are.

Basically I don't like names that signal you think you/your children are better than other people.
