Evelyn or Emelia??

I think I like the name Evelyn with Evie for short. DM likes it but is really keen on Emelia. Which doesn't do much for me but could grow on me ... also not sure what we would want to shorten it to. Thoughts please ...

I have an Emilia and I pronounce it Emil-ya which I think is quite different to the long ee in Amelia or emelia (which my phone tries to change back to Emilia so she might have a lot of correcting to do if you spell it that way). It was something like 66th in the baby names last year so way below Amelia (and Evelyn/evey/Evie I'm guessing)

MsTSwift · 14/03/2019 05:30

Neither. You do realise the Eve names are mentally popular? It’s like being called Sarah in the 70s. At one point one third of the girls in dds class named a variant of eve. Emilia sounds like a messed about version of Emily which is also very common. Would avoid personally but then have a dull
over used name myself

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 14/03/2019 05:21

Emelia

Orchidflower1 · 12/03/2019 15:53

Evelyn makes me think of either Evelyn Waugh or the character in coronation street played by the by advert woman. Diverse I know! Either way I’m not too keen because of this and because ( as a pp said) the pronunciation of it can vary.

aliceandkids77 · 12/03/2019 15:50

I much prefer Evelyn, gorgeous name and Evie is adorable.
I don't care for Emelia, don't like it all. You could go with the nn Emmy/Emmie with is cute I think.

Pemba · 12/03/2019 15:37

Would prefer Eva or Eve. Or Amelia or Emily.

pilates · 11/03/2019 22:06

Emelia

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/03/2019 21:47

Definitely Evelyn and pronounced Ever-lyn or Ev-lyn. Not a fan of Eve-lyn

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/03/2019 19:28

Evelyn. Beautiful.

Emilia just looks like an incorrectly spelt Amelia, and that's a really popular name. Emily would be more logical.

Zogsyoungersister · 11/03/2019 19:26

Emilia and Emelia would be pronounced the same, no? Em-ee-lee-a.

I think Emilia is the correct spelling and that Emelia is just an error based on changing the first letter of Amelia (which again has exactly the same sound but with a slightly different beginning: Am-ee-lee-a)

Crunched · 11/03/2019 18:01

Why do people keep saying Emilia ( unless like DizziLizzi device autocorrects), this is different to Emelia, lots more ‘eeee’ sound than Emilia.
I know an Emelia known as Mimi which is nice and suits her.

3in4years · 11/03/2019 17:56

Evelyn is beautiful and classic.
Emilia I don't like at all.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 10/03/2019 19:59

Emelia sounds a bit made up Vs Emilia (lovely) or Amelia.

Evelyn is nice but there are a ton of Evies around here.

I'd go for Emilia or Evelyn nicknamed Eva...

Happyandglorious · 10/03/2019 19:55

To me, Evelyn is in the ranks of Babara, Marilyn and Sandra etc
An old woman name that is not old lady chic.
It seems popular on mn but I find it boring and old fashioned.
Sorry

han01uk · 10/03/2019 16:32

We have an Emelia. Most people call her Milly/Millie,but I still call her Emelia most of the time. I emphasise the E so most people actually do cotton on the different spelling but we do also spend a lot of time saying "Emelia spelt E-m-e...."!!

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/03/2019 16:28

Don't like either of the long names but Evie is cute. Edie is too. I used to be a nanny to an Edie.

DizziLizzy · 10/03/2019 16:27

Emelia autocorrects to Emilia on my iPhone....

Also I know one who pronounces it Em-ee-Lee-ah and another who is Emily-ah

RuthW · 10/03/2019 16:02

I love Evelyn but can't bear that it is pronounced three ways

Eve lyn
Ev lyn
Ever lyn

starzig · 10/03/2019 15:30

Evelyn but not Evie

VelvetPineapple · 10/03/2019 15:27

Emelia is too similar to Amelia. You’re more likely to get away with Emilia due to its similarity to Emily and the fact that everyone knows the famous actress with that name.

Shadow1234 · 10/03/2019 15:20

Evelyn by miles.

Firsttimemama2017 · 10/03/2019 14:38

I prefer Evelyn
Emelia is pretty but she would spend her whole life telling people it's not Amelia!

chiarazuri · 10/03/2019 14:37

Emelia sounds beautiful!

brizzlemint · 10/03/2019 12:57

How about Emilia or Emily?

I don't like Evelyn, it's very dated.

WoahThereMama · 10/03/2019 12:52

I like Evelyn but really dislike Evie/Eva. They are everywhere to the point where it’s a yawnsome name. I don’t see why it needs a nickname.

As a PP said Emelia will constantly get mistaken for Amelia.
