I would just worry about the potential for teasing as it sounds like 'rude' and you know what kids are like. If you lived in a German speaking country it would be fine.

Also people may mishear/misspell it as the girls' name Ruby.

I love it and it would have been on ‘my list’ if I could say my rs properly! Along with Rory and Rhodri.

PerdHapley shocked you called your nephew's name absolutely horrible. I didn't like my husband's name when I met him but I wouldn't describe it in those words after I developed an interest in him. Rudy is not an offensive name. In different cultures there are names that could sound weird in the English language. Sheetal is a common Indian girl's name which sounds like sh*t all. Actress Madhuri Dixit's surname is said dikshit. In their language it means something beautiful and sophisticated. Madhuri has many fans and a small minority of immature socially underdeveloped individuals that will have a laugh at her name. Bullying is not cool and no parent should shy away from a name and let the bullies win.

I know a rather nice little boy called Rudy, who has made me think of it as a cute enough name, but I'm not sure whether it will work so well in adulthood. It sounds a bit... "jokey" maybe?

The British Baby Names website lists all the births announced in the Telegraph & Times etc. - I noticed a recent Rudy on there - although a girl.

I dont know why anyone wouldny like it i think its a lovely name. I dont think i would use it as it wouldnt go with our last name or my sons name but i do think its adorable. You cant win on here, a name is either 'too common' 'too chavvy' or some other immature response. I think go for it, its your child!

Sessy no the apology is mine as I realise you have a relative with this name so understandably defensive. But statistically it’s simply untrue that everyone wants top ten names - I have a bit of a love of all things statistics (autistic accountant...) so hard not to respond to comments that are simply untrue. The top ten names are a significantly smaller % of overall babies registered than ever before, because the current fashion is to be unique.

Op I actually really like the name Rudolph - I met an adult one in a former work place & it struck me as unusual but nice. Rudy isn’t too my taste at all but it won’t be out of place in their generation. Just not sure I’d do Rude Willy

I’d care how people would react to my child’s name - it’s their identity not my fashion accessory.

The comment about parents all wanting top 10 is ridiculous given the current trend is to try and be as unique as possible meaning that most parents veto anything anyone else might possibly have. Thousands of names registered a year as a result which wasn’t the case in previous generations. Far fewer kids than ever before have a ‘top ten’ name - particularly girls.

I guess part of naming your child is really not giving a shit about what other people think. Eye rolling or side glances etc. Who cares?

I am aware of the rudies/farts connection, though no-one I know uses it. The fact that it exists is enough to put me off though.

I actually have an eight year old nephew called Rudy, and I thought that it would grow on me because I love him, but I still think his name is absolutely horrible, sadly.

Oh, and PPs mentioned loads of people going out of the way to comment positively on their unusual name choice for their child. Some of those are genuine, but some are for sure a very British way of trying to disguise a surprise and dislike - and yes, probably judgement - of a name that they consider pretty awful. I've definitely done this myself, and I know lots of others do this too. In fact, specifically with the name Rudy was when I saw this in action - everyone cooing over the new baby (fair enough, he was gorgeous) and exclaiming "oh how lovely and unusual!" When his name was revealed, but then several widened eyes and thrown glances happened out of the parent's sight.

I only know one, he's 11 and a pretty cool kid.

Great name. Some names evoke a certain feeling, taste or something sensory. Rudy feels efficient. It doesn't sound lethargic.

I know a dog with this name so now I see it as a dog name lol. I think Rudy is actually super cute tho!
