Am I being totally ridiculous considering the name Bear for DS? Blush

Just about acceptable as a middle name but he won’t thank you if it’s a first name.

I wanted to call DS Orson, which means bear cub, unfortunately DP didn't like it

I was half right in that his first name is Buddy, not Bear. Not sure though that mumsnet would be too fond of the name Buddy either 😂

I do like the name but as some PPs have said, he probably wouldn't be taken seriously when he's older being called Bear!

I've had to consult my learned friend Prof Wikipedia and she tells me that as well as the somberly named River Rocket, Mr Oliver also sired a boy child called Buddy Bear. Grin Grin

You could say that about the name Mark though. Like "ooh what mark did you get on your test?“ or "damn I've got an awful mark on my new top!"

Bear as a nickname is lovely. Bradley is the name of the haven holidays bear? Brad-bear. Benny-Bear.

On the flip side, I think Osito means teddy bear or little bear in Spanish (Please correct me if I'm wrong I don't speak a word of the language!) Little Ozzy-Bear would be nice from that?

Some of these comments have really made me laugh. I have to agree with the majority @amrscot - Bear is very cute as a toddler, but not cute as an adult doctor, lawyer, electrician, IT technician etc.

If I received a CV for a job application under the name 'Bear' I would just be a bit 😒😒 I couldn't imagine introducing "my colleague Bear" to any of my clients. I just don't think it works for an adult.

Use it as a nickname or middle name but I would definitely not use as a first name on birth certificate.

I think Bear is cute in a kid but really weird as a 35 year old skinny accountant.

Put Edward on his birth certificate. Call him Bear. Fill all forms in as “Edward (Bear) Smith” and he can be known as Bear.

Until he hits 14 and then he can re-style himself as Ed.

We have an Arthur who is often called Bear as a nickname. Doubt we'll be doing it when he's 40!

Term of endearment fine, middle name, fine but imagine meeting your solicitor or a judge or any professional called bear it just doesn't work.

I'd assume parents of a kid called Bear were just really into emulating B List celebs. Cheryl Many-Surnames has a son called Bear and I'm sure Jamie Oliver does too. It just seems faddy and not half as original as people might think.
