Anyone who knows a child named Summer? A quick question please

We really love the name Summer. It seems a really happy and friendly name. It’s also a family name on my husband’s side (he’s not British and where he’s from it’s not as unusual as here, although we have no plans to move there).

My only reservation is that our baby is due imminently so clearly won’t be a summer baby! I don’t mind this, and kind of like that we have chosen the name simply because we love it rather than to also correspond to when she’ll be born IYSWIM, although I also understand that approach may seem more sensible!

Those of you with a Summer in the family, does it get wearing being asked if your Summer was born then? I imagine it’ll get extra tiring when I respond “er, nope” Grin
Not sure I k am over thinking this!

The other thing was just generally what do people think of the name? It is more unusual than I’d ordinarily like, but I am very drawn to it. I think my concern is that my own parents will absolutely hate it (and they’re not the type to pretend otherwise) but I need to get over that! I smile whenever I say it so it is a name I really do like Smile

Btw, I’m not worried about the whole “she can’t be a high court judge if she’s called Summer” stuff. My name isn’t the best (80’s doll whose rival had a boyfriend called Ken) and despite the acknowledged lack of gravitas, I still managed to qualify into my chosen profession Wink

Hi all, My husband and I are struggling with naming our new little baby girl (5 days old). We like Celeste and Summer. What’s your thoughts on these names? We would have the favourite as first name and the other as middle name. So, either ‘Celeste Summer’ or ‘Summer Celeste’. Any thoughts really welcome. Any warnings about why these names might not work. Also, any nicknames for either one as I’d like to use a cute nickname but can’t think of any for these names. Thank you for your thoughts!

Sorry, big time brackets fail there!

Are you happy you chose the name? (Hope it’s ok to ask that). A year of questions sounds v annoying (especially when your DH was never asked! Also, I’m not sure why people need to comment (and laugh!) like the woman in toddler group, but it’s good to know that it does ease off (eventually! Smile)

Once she turned one it seemed to ease off. I was dubious about giving her a month name but DH loved it but interestingly noone has ever asked him. I remember some woman at a toddler group asking and when I said she wasn't born in that month she laughed and said oh that's a weird choice then. We do get a lot of friends and family forgetting her birthday thinking it's in that month

NetflixAndDill · 22/02/2019 17:18

Thank you allSmile

It’s great to hear that people think a winter baby is no bar to the name. I agree that it conjures up happy times which is a large part of why I love it.

I’m loving Summer Day! How cool would it be to hear that called out at the GP surgery Grin (I wouldn’t be brave enough to that either!)

Lake - that’s exactly what I was worrying about (mainly the Hmm face!). Sounds tedious! Has it eased off now your daughter is older?? These responses have given me Dutch courage though! Smile

My daughter has a month name and I felt like I was asked at least 3 or 4 times a day for the first year of her life whether she was born in that month and people were always a bit Hmm when I said she wasn't

ThameslinkSurvivor · 22/02/2019 08:51

I always liked the name Summer (as well as Autumn and Winter) but unfortunately our surname is Day!

We did joke about calling dd1 Summer Day but obviously couldn’t do it for real.

Spooksandchocolatecake · 22/02/2019 03:13

I know two summers both lovely girls which the name matches. One born in October the other August you will get a few questions but I guess you will with any slightly different names

Somethingsmellsnice · 22/02/2019 02:37

Another March born Summer here.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 22/02/2019 01:12

My DD’s best friend is a Summer. She was actually burning Summer but I’d never really given it much thought!
I say go for it, it’s a beautiful name Smile

Antonin · 22/02/2019 00:55

Summer conjures up sunny day and happy times to me so I’d use it. But I’m not in favour of a second name that adds to the meaning of Summer eg Summer Rose as I feel that’s rather twee

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 22/02/2019 00:16

I've known a Summer. I like the name. I like season names though. My favorite is Autumn.

Springwalk · 21/02/2019 19:08

Birth month makes no difference. The name is symbolic. Summer for me means happy and sunny. Autumn perhaps beautiful, warm gentle. I wouldn’t assume that was when the child was necessarily born.
Summer is a very pretty name.

Shadow1234 · 21/02/2019 19:04

summer is such a pretty name and it wouldnt bother be which month she was born. I'd just go for it if you love it.

PQ77 · 21/02/2019 18:59

Well it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere! Despite living here for years and years February is still a “summer month” in my mind

Treefloof · 21/02/2019 18:59

The only summer I know was born December time and an April born in may!!!
Still like the names.

sagradafamiliar · 21/02/2019 18:53

I know someone who got round the seasonal thing by spelling it Sommer...

NetflixAndDill · 21/02/2019 17:28

That’s a good point Grin

I love Winter too, and would go for it Half. If you can have a Summer not in summer...

Cookit · 21/02/2019 16:49

Spring babies were conceived in the summer though!

NetflixAndDill · 21/02/2019 15:50

I’m in London, so I expect it’ll sound a bit summa here too! Grin I don’t really mind that though (I kind of like how friendly it sounds) and I do still love it Smile

Threenager · 21/02/2019 15:38

I think it’s nice if you have an American accent... think the OC show. But in England (well where I live) the final “r” is lost so people say “summa”. I do like the name, but again where I live it’s a bit down market. But if you love it, use it!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/02/2019 15:33

I know two Summers but not well, aged 19 and 5. I don’t know when their birthdays are but it wouldn’t occur to me that they would need to be summer born to have the name. I don’t think it matters.

HalfBloodPrincess · 21/02/2019 15:30

I’m going through the opposite - I love the name winter but baby is due in May!

Then again I do know a woman called January who was born (a few weeks early) in December and her parents didn’t change their choice!

NetflixAndDill · 21/02/2019 15:26

That made me smile about April (also a lovely name!).

Ahhh thank you both (and everyone else too!). I’m going to go for it!

Welshgirl2019 · 21/02/2019 15:20

I love the name and I wouldn't ever consider restricting the name because it isn't summer. Go for it!
