Is Amélie too similar to Amelia?

DN is an Amelia, we are very close and she grew up with us.

I love the name Amélie which although pronounced very different to Amelia looks the same on paper.

Would you think it weird to call DD this given my nieces name?

They are very very similar names but DN might well be fine with it. It’s not like they’re step siblings which would be totally weird and wrong. I’d just ask her.

I think they might be slightly annoyed/Hmm to start with (possibly) but they'll get over it quickly if they're normal people. And as there's a big age gap I really don't think it matters

Why do the majority of people choose the same names?! There are hundreds of lovely normal under used names out there yet so so many choose

Isabel/la
Amelia/Amelie/Emily/Emilia/Ella

I know a couple of sets of first cousins with exactly the same name (which is a bit weird) so I think it’s fine, as they are slightly different. If they were siblings that would be different!!

I do think its similiar on paper but as they are said together when you say Amelia and Amélie I think its rather cute! If its the name you love then go for it, when your DD is here the Amelia/Amélie thing won’t be made a thing of. best of luck! x

I think that they are far too similar, and in my family it’s would be a definite no. But there are plenty of families where this is normal.

They are basically the same name. There are so many beautiful girls name to chose from. Id pick something else.

Friend, a fluent French speaker and language teacher pronounces her daughter’s name as Am uh lee the A as in jam.
I think it’s beautiful — flows better than Amelia
The age difference between the cousins means that they are unlikely to be confused with each other.
I’m pretty fussy about names but would use this one.

I think they are very similar but given the age gap and situation I really don't think it matters. Both are very pretty.

My second cousin but close family has exactly the same name as me but with a different pronunciation.
She is 12 years younger than me and I’ve always found it super flattering that she also has my name Grin HTH!

The pronounciation issue actually makes them more similar as Amelie is usually the one with an AH sound being the French

So they’re using a French pronounciation of Amelia which means it really is almost the exact same name

Don’t most people pronounce Amelia - A Me Lia?

Therefore very similar to Amelie. Just not in your family.

However if niece isn’t bothered and as she is significantly older than your baby then go for it if you love it.

I think I would choose a different first name and maybe use Amelie as a middle name.

It’s almost the same name not just on paper but in sound too. It depends on the age gap I think - if your niece is a teenager & can be asked permission she’d prob not care or be flattered in which case I can’t see the issue
But for same generation it would be really weird I think

They’re not just very similar they’re the same name.

If you want to name your DD after your niece - that’s fine. It’s a compliment. But that is essentially what you’re doing.

Not everyone will pronounce the names the way that you do so be prepared for them to sound more similar than you think. If they have the same surname then I'd opt for a different name. But if they have different surnames then I think their names in full will sound suitably different. But I would ask your niece's parents. There's no point storing up bad feeling about a name.

They are obviously very similar and sound it too. However, I don’t think there is anything wrong with cousins having the same name let alone a similar one!

Absolutely fine and they sound pretty different to me. Those saying they are the same name, so are Paul and Pablo but they still sound different.

If you love the name, go for it! For what it's worth, I think it's a lovely name.

Completely fine, we have uncles and nephews with the same name just call them Neil and baby Neil, we have a jack and a Jackson who are cousins.

Yep sorry far too close. If you didn't see your DN much it would be ok but as you have a close relationship I wouldn't.

Gorgeous name and I don't think it would cause a problem with an Amelia. I simply wouldn't choose it based on how the pronunciation will be butchered by 99% of non French speakers.
