Scottish girl names

Just found out we are having a girl, due in June. We already have a Murdo which everyone says is a great name, so we're struggling to come up with something else as good.

Our criteria are - Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic, Easy to spell, doesn't have any stupid nicknames, unuaual but not unheard of (less than 50 born per year in Scotland).

We have a Mc Surname.

Our current shortlist is
Girls
Ailith
Ailsa
Alba
Eilidh
Heather
Islay
Morven
Rowan
Willow

But not all of them fit the criteria but they give you the idea of the sort of names we like. Looking for any other suggestions!!

I once met an awesome kid called Eilidh, so would vote for that!

Thistles24 · 30/01/2019 20:53

LOVE Alisa and Morven, if I’d had daughters that’d be their names. Also like:
Katie
Kirsty
Mairi

I see people suggesting what I consider to be “Scottish granny names” quite often just now (Peggy, Greta, Ina, Zena,Etta etc.) They’re not to my taste, but some are nicer than others.

mumofbun · 30/01/2019 16:48

I think it should be Breagh (said Bree- a) not Breagha (Bree-a-a?) which does indeed mean beautiful :)

Love Morven and Ailsa. Wouldn't go with Alba as there is BBC Alba and a lot of Saor Alba (free Scotland) graffitti around, unless that's what you're into!

Know someone who called her daughter Aila which is cute.

E20mom · 30/01/2019 16:10

I know from a friend's experience that Eilidh is difficult for English people to know how to pronounce.

She mostly gets called eyelid.

MaiaRindell · 30/01/2019 15:56

More like Bree-ah

SunnyScot89 · 30/01/2019 15:34

@MaiaRindell I like Breagha is it pronounced like Freya but with a B?

@SunnyScot89...and I also have a Maisie. And a Tillidh which I corrupted into a Scottish spelling!

MaiaRindell · 30/01/2019 14:41

@SunnyScot89 yes, mistyped! It's Breagha. A colleague's daughter has this name. It means beautiful in gaelic.

FoofFighter · 30/01/2019 14:19

I met a young Morag today in a coffee shop, aged 1.5/2 - very sweet name I thought Smile goes well as a pair with Murdo too.

babydresses · 30/01/2019 14:18

do-li-na, dol-ina ] The baby girl name Dolina is used predominantly in the Scottish language and it is derived from Celtic origins. Dolina is a variation of the name Donalda (English and Scottish). Dolina is not frequently used as a baby girl name.

babydresses · 30/01/2019 14:17

Sorry Dolina

babydresses · 30/01/2019 14:17

Well I also have a Murdo. I don't have any girls but if I did I would call her the Scottish name Dolinda, you can shorten it to Dolly which is cute.

mytieisascarf · 30/01/2019 14:13

Annabel
Blair
Elspeth
Aggie
Cairistiona
Florrie
Grace

SunnyScot89 · 30/01/2019 14:02

I love Masie but my friend has one and wouldn't want to copy!
Morag is nice but reminds me of a weird girl from school.

How would you pronounce Breaha ( is it not Breagha)? Struggling to find a meaning. It's maybe too unusual.

I like Fearne though, I have family in NZ so that would be kind of appropriate too.

I like Meredith, but it was stolen by Disney!!

Lots of good ideas though, thank you!!

OP - You may know this already but Alba is not pronounced as it looks. It's actually pronounced Alupah.

Breaha
Mhairi
Maisie
Elise
Freya
Greer
Kenzie
Sorcha

CantRainAllTheTime · 30/01/2019 12:43

Murron (muh-run)

Njordsgrrrl · 30/01/2019 12:04

I love Isla. Seen in spelled like the island too.

WrapAndRoll · 30/01/2019 12:02

IMHO it's because Murdo ends in a vowel that it flows better than Morag Mc...

thatsmyspace · 30/01/2019 12:01

Rhona

GB54 · 30/01/2019 11:58

I like Bonnie and Skye.

IVflytrap · 30/01/2019 09:56

Ealasaid
Ailis
Ferelith

Eriska

Love Heather, Morven and Rowan out of your list.

BrieAndOatcakes · 30/01/2019 09:51

I don't think it'd be any more of a mouthful than Murdo Mc...?

WrapAndRoll · 30/01/2019 09:38

I love the name Morag but think Morag Mc..... could be a bit of a mouthful.

WrapAndRoll · 30/01/2019 09:37

I like Alisa and Heather best, then Willow.

Elspeth
Alexina
Senga
Catriona
Isla
