What do you think about the name Pippa?
Its a female diminutive of a name of someone where important to me.
Thanks :-)

'It means vagina in Polish'

Keeps on giving!

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 02:41

Personally I wouldn't give my daughter a name that meant blowjob in Greek, shag in Swedish, and wank in Italian.

Imagine how you'd advise a French woman who wanted to call her daughter Fanny.

Despite Brexit we live in an international world. Give your child name that travels well. Not one that has people sniggering.

swimmerforlife · 27/01/2019 02:01

Peppa is Pippa in kiwi!

Yes but I am assuming the OP does not live in NZ so that's irrelevant besides the point I am a kiwi and I still would not pronounce it as Peppa-

jessstan2 · 27/01/2019 01:34

Philippa, Pippa for short. Like Duch of Cambs sister. Sounds pretty!

Lara53 · 27/01/2019 01:02

I teach a Tilda - that’s her name on the birth certificate. Unusual and very pretty

Wallabyone · 26/01/2019 23:54

I was just coming on to add the Greek meaning...

It's pretty enough in English though! I think I prefer Piper as a stand-alone name though.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 26/01/2019 23:46

I love it. It's fine as it is on the birth certificate.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 26/01/2019 23:45

Oh I know, just word association. I don't believe children bully children because of names anyway. If you love it you must use it! It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Japanesejazz · 26/01/2019 23:27

In Greek it means blow job. I know this because of 3 day eventing and the olympics, only time pippa funnel had to use her full name

ChimpyChops · 26/01/2019 23:18

Absolutely love it!

JacksonPillock · 26/01/2019 23:17

Pippa Peg

Believability · 26/01/2019 23:15

Just to clarify..... we do not like longer names shortened. My opinion is if you are going to call your child a name then thats the name on their birth certificate. So we would not use Philippa.

I totally agree. I have never in my life wished I had a longer name to choose from.

SemperIdem · 26/01/2019 23:07

Pippa does not travel well and means something rude in most European countries. I wouldn’t put it as the given name, really I wouldn’t.

Ngaio2 · 26/01/2019 22:48

I knew a Pippa ( full name) who was a lovely young girl. The name has a timeless quality about it— yet modern and unpretentious

whiteroseredrose · 26/01/2019 22:11

I really like it. Have known a couple of lovely Pippas

tammytoby · 26/01/2019 19:38

I don't like it. Pippa is also very close to Pippi, wee in German!

MumMumMum1 · 26/01/2019 19:34

@Sunneye

Speaking as a Philippa/Pippa, please don’t.

I loathe the name. It’s hideous.

Ahh that’s made me feel gutted! I really hope my pippa doesn’t feel this way. She’s just a pippa!

TheseThingsAreFunAndFunIsGood · 26/01/2019 19:21

Peppa is Pippa in kiwi! 😂😂

hiptobeasquare · 26/01/2019 19:13

I love Pippa, it was on our short list. :) Go for it OP!

heartoftheocean · 26/01/2019 19:12

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup Can I just ask the relevance of Peppa Pig? Im not asking to call my daughter Peppa. Its Pippa.

It means vagina in Polish.
I think Peppa pig would put me off more, though.
If these don't bother you and you love it, use it!

heartoftheocean · 26/01/2019 18:07

Thank you everyone so far! Such positive feedback!

This made me chuckle as my partner complains about this name a lot. His brother & SIL named their kid Pippa and it irritates him that people will always assume she's Philippa which has been shortened to Pippa. In his opinion they should have used Pippa only as a nickname and let her choose herself later which she prefers.

Sunneye · 26/01/2019 17:57

Matilda is gorgeous though - there’s a reason it’s quite popular. It’s because it’s a lovely name.

Philippa on the other hand...
