DH chose daughters name, opinions please

I know it's two late to change my daughters name, and this is a pretty pointless post, but it will just confirm what I think people feel about my daughters name or not. DH named her.

I was very ill all throughout my pregnancy and after birth. DD didn't have a name for 4 weeks after birth, it was nearing the time to register her. I said that DH could name her. I was expecting him to let me know what he's decided before he registered her so I can give it the thumbs up or not. I wasn't going to be extremely picky, time wasn't on our side.

A few days later he came home and said that he registered DD. I asked what name he picked and he has picked Mackenzie-May (not actual spelling). I could write a whole page on how I felt about him registering her without even letting me know there was an appointment, or even letting me know her name! But this isn't a rant I was just wondering everyone's views on her name. Not something I would of gone for imo, but i now can't imagine her not being Mackenzie.

Whatever name you put on here some will love and some will hate.

My penny's worth is that the name is fine. Better without the hyphen and assuming no middle name. Also better if you haven't double barrelled your surnames too as Mackenzie-Mae Johnson-Thompson would be a bit much.

Yearinyearout · 19/01/2019 07:51

horsesheep I think the name is unusual enough to be identifying...and the fact that you've stated it's a slight variation on the spelling gives you away even more.

FogCutter · 19/01/2019 07:38

It's not my cup of tea but I think Mckenzie and May are nice names individually, it's the hyphenated May bit I don't like.

You can always drop that bit either by changing it officially- or unofficially by just by not writing it on things like nursery and school application forms.

Gina2012 · 19/01/2019 07:20

They're not so bad when you check out the links above Smile

Arpafeelie · 19/01/2019 07:11

I know a lovely teenage MacKenzie, known as Kenzi.

I also know a teen who was named after her grandmother, with a classic first name, and often says she wishes her parents had named her MacKenzie, which was her grandmother's maiden name, instead.

As someone has already said, J.K. Rowling's younger daughter is a MacKenzie.

Willow1992 · 18/01/2019 18:21

Another vote for just dropping the hyphen. Even if you drop it by deed poll it wouldn't seem as significant as a complete name change, most people wouldn't even notice! Hopefully such a minor change wouldn't hurt your husband's feeling either. Has he said if he would be happy for some kind of change?
I love Mackenzie or Kenzie, and Mackenzie May Whatever sounds nice as a full name. I totally get the problem you have with the hyphen.
I can't get over the association I have with a mother of a girl called Name-Mae at a school I used to work at and would OTT come storming in to complain if she heard anyone had left off the -Mae!

BoudicasBoudoir · 18/01/2019 17:41

I’m sorry the name was registered without your approval. That would have really pissed me off, too. It’s an important decision.

Just as an aside, any name with a ‘mac’ prefix means ‘son of’.

mathanxiety · 17/01/2019 22:19

Mackenzie isn't bad at all. It has a certain ring to it.

You can easily get rid of the hyphen - May is a nice middle name - or change May to something else altogether.
Fay/Faith, Joy, and Hope spring to mind, but other names would work equally nicely: Grace, Rose, Elizabeth, Catherine, Eleanor, Olivia...

Congratulations on your baby girl and well done Flowers

LynetteScavo · 17/01/2019 21:09

I like Mackenzie. I like May. I don't like hyphenated names.

I know several girls with May or Leigh or Rae added but none of them are actually called by the bit after the hyphen.

I think most people will just call her Mackenzie unless you insist otherwise.

Freyanna · 17/01/2019 20:18

I like Kenzie as a nickname.

SilverDoe · 17/01/2019 16:40

I actually like the name Mackenzie. I never had a chavvy association with it either; I grew up on a council estate despite having fairly well off parents and the only Mackenzie I ever new I met at the posh riding school I went to. I always thought it was a really cool name :)

Hate May as a middle/hyphenated name though Blush

Yulebealrite · 17/01/2019 16:36

It's a lovely name - without the May bit added to it. I'd definitely drop that.

SauvignonMum · 17/01/2019 16:34

I really can't believe a parent would go and register a baby without discussing and informing the other parent of the name they had chosen. It is absolutely insane, regardless of how ill you were. I could never forgive my husband for that.

And I hate to be mean, but MacKenzie means 'son of', so it's not even a girls name - it's a surname, but would be suitable for a boy.
I like the name May, but don't like the trend of adding it to first names.

tammytoby · 17/01/2019 16:23

Do you want honest opinions? In which case, I'm afraid I don't like the name.

MrsPworkingmummy · 17/01/2019 15:24

@RiverTam This is a public Internet forum. The title of this particular post is 'DH chose daughter's name, opinions please.' I gave my opinion on the name only and NOT the child. It's an absolutely hideous name in my opinion - you might think otherwise, and that's also fine. There are clearly some who like the name, I personally, do not.

RiverTam · 17/01/2019 08:40

I don't often @ people, but @MrsPworkingmummy what a completely twattish thing to say. The baby is 17 months old. This is her name.

And, no, 'the OP asked for opinions' doesn't cut it.

PloddingOnwards · 16/01/2019 23:13

It's fine , you could call her Kenzie for a nickname x

linkinperk · 16/01/2019 22:47

It's awful sorry.

Separately they're ok but hyphenating with May is just so naff. And over done.

HeronLanyon · 16/01/2019 22:37

I too am in Chambers and we have a lovely diverse tenant profile (plus names!).

horsesheep · 16/01/2019 22:32

Thank you so much @MyLearnedFriend such a lovely and reassuring message Thanks

I will message you, when I figure out how to do it! I use the app and you can't message someone using the app. I need to log in on a browser, I'm not sure which of my 5000 email addresses I used! I'm a sucker when it comes to forgetting login details Blush

And also, I promise (from a profession that is notoriously conservative) if someone has the skills, a name will not disadvantage them.

OP - feel free to message me and I'll happily tell you all about the junior members of my chambers with wonderful, normal, names.

@L0ki, @Cbeebies Wine and Cake

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/01/2019 22:08

MyLearnedFriend Wine cheers to your comment.
You’re so right, people forget that they are talking to a real life person about their real life daughter. A little tact goes a long way.

HeronLanyon · 16/01/2019 22:03

I said above I didn’t really like the name but so what and go right ahead and keep it and ignore naysayers.
Interestingly I have come to quite like it (without the -May though). Thanks for helping this okdnstick in the mud (not really not generally) think again.

L0kiWh0 · 16/01/2019 22:02

@MyLearnedFriend that’s a really lovely message Smile

It amazes me sometimes that people forget there’s an actual person behind the post, especially in this case where it’s pretty obvious the OP has gone through a very traumatic experience.
