So out of curiosity I searched my own name in the mumsnet search function to see what opinions are on my name as a ‘baby name’.

Turns out I have a very very horrible name that everyone hates!!!

Makes me feel a bit sad. I always thought it was quite nice.

Oh well....

Has anyone else done this?

I have just done a search and in November someone started a thread about my name and some lovely things have been said!!made me So happy! As always disliked my name and usually go by a shortened version..... now thinking I should start using the full version!!!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/01/2019 20:11

Yep, everyone hates my name and it was one of those ones featuring high in the "who did you go to school with in the 70s?" threads , along with Sharon, Tracy etc.

NoParticularPattern · 09/01/2019 20:07

I always thought my name was a bit plain. But apparently MN thinks it’s lovely! Suits any age and not overly popular that it’s common. Who knew!

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 09/01/2019 20:05

Mine is dated and horrible and apparently from the 70's (I was born in the 90's)

InAPreviousLife · 09/01/2019 20:02

I like this game...I've never really thought much of my name before but according to MN folk it's a 'good looking' name or could be 'someone important' or indeed a classic.

Apparently it's also open to abuse and abbreviated versions are low brow but all in all it's not slated.

There's something inoffensive about me...now to live up to my name not to let the side down Grin

DD1 is common (we know, but didn't at the time of naming)
DD2 is confusing (traditional Welsh name that no one can pronounce...we did run it past people but didn't think to run it past people who can't speak Welsh!)

ShortandSweet96 · 09/01/2019 19:57

Just looked up mine.
Apparently it's a ridiculous spelling, and people don't know how to pronounce it, and it's too try-hard.

Come to think of it.. I never did get a mug or keyring with my name on it.. jeez thanks mum!

AmmarettoSours · 09/01/2019 19:56

my name is more commonly a dogs name.
i cant count the amount of times iv heard my name being called to turn around and see its someone shouting their dog Grin

BertieBotts · 09/01/2019 19:50

DS1's name is chavvy and naughty according to MN. DS2's is nice but boring, overdone.

Meh.

Jojoanna · 09/01/2019 19:45

wendywoopywoo222 I love the name wendy

WhatNow40 · 09/01/2019 19:42

No results found

Confused not an unusual name at all, of Irish catholic origin. Although I would pity a baby that was given my name!

Dollyandteddy · 09/01/2019 19:35

Wow, my name is universally loathed, apparently it’s really quite chavy. Never thought of my set as a chav!

Redgreencoverplant · 09/01/2019 19:22

Mine is generally approved of by MN and DS' definitely is :)

PissOffPeppa · 09/01/2019 19:16

I’ve just done this. My full name is a very 90s nickname of a much more classic name so there’s lots of people saying “If I call my child X, will they necessarily become Y?” Most of the replies seem to be “I’ve got nothing against the nickname, I just dislike it”. I’ve looked through a lot of posts and can’t find a single one where someone explains why they don’t like it. Apparently it’s just hugely unpopular for no reason Grin

There’s also someone who says they never trust someone with my name, but someone else who says most of us are nice.

lanbro · 09/01/2019 18:09

Mine is apparently posh, pretty and strong! It's not a common name, and I go by a shortened version so was very odd seeing my name written so much!

Nothisispatrick · 09/01/2019 18:07

I did the search. It’s a geographical name (place named after a person!) and people focus on that a lot. Some love it and others aren’t ‘keen’. A lot of suggestions for similar names.

Names definitely go through fashions and I would find a baby Cheryl a bit weird, doesn’t mean it’s a bad name!

Nothisispatrick · 09/01/2019 17:58

I have quite an old fashioned and unusual name that’s not generally popular on MN, however I get complimented on it pretty much every time I meet new people 🤷‍♀️

CharlyAngelic · 09/01/2019 17:51

Searched my brother’s name too . We are both rulers and like the same biscuits.
No wonder we don’t get on .Grin

Knittink · 09/01/2019 16:23

Just searched mine, expecting it would be hated and.... yup! Only people around my age (47) seem to have it. Dated in a bad way, and often misspelled because of the male/female versions. I hated it as a teenager but am resigned to it as an adult. I was named after my grandfather (but with the female spelling, obvs).

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/01/2019 16:14

Ha being a Wendy it's never going to be a good thing to Mumsnet search my name. 😂

I love it though.

spyrothedrag · 09/01/2019 15:59

Mine's boring or okay.
That's how I've always felt about it. As a child, I dreamed of changing it to something daring.

Princess Spanglegoose. That's pretty out there.

Lightsong · 09/01/2019 15:57

Oh no @Narya I wonder if we have the same name

cricketmum84 · 09/01/2019 15:51

Haha @LunaMuna !!

I was named after a song, spelt slightly differently but the same pronunciation. Funnily enough the pronunciation of my name is argued about on a thread and the wrong "pronouncer" cites my song as an example! Noooo still wrong...

I've been going through this for years 😂😂

Lost5stone · 09/01/2019 15:37

Ohhh that was interesting. I have a very uncommon name so there were only 2 proper opinions on it:

"60 year old chain smoker"
"contraceptive pill"

Well done mum, great choice Grin

Narya · 09/01/2019 15:29

Interestingly my parents picked my name because it was classic and timeless, yet there are several MN threads declaring it boring and dated!

Lightsong · 09/01/2019 15:23

My name is perfect and lovely apparently.

And classic, elegant and timeless Grin
