It's a boy! Name choice thoughts?

We both like Cain for a first name, Douglas for a middle name after DH dad and surname begins with M.

I also dislike Cain for all the same reasons already mentioned - first association is with a murderer, second is a stick to beat people with, “naughty boy” name etc.

Adam is lovely and the one syllable/four letter name can’t be that important if your DS1 is Mason...

The only Cain I thought of was Kane the WWF wrestler. It reminded me of him instantly, as I used to watched religiously as a teen (Blush
It's a murderer in the bible, an evil wrestler and something you hit someone with, it just sounds like a mean, harsh name and I can't imagine it on a squidgy baby.
Adam is so much nicer, just my opinion of course, congrats.

I also did not say I dislike Christianity. It just holds no meaning to me. Nor did I say I was proud of my celtic origins, just that is the origin of my country. I am choosing Cain, because I like it. It is unusual, has one syllable and four letters like the males in my DH family, my DH and kids like it, it won't be too difficult for my baby to one day learn the write or spell, it isn't hard to pronounce. A minor association with something I don't believe in is hardly going to outweigh all the reasons for liking it. That would be ridiculous.

Have I said I dont want opinions? I asked for thoughts in my OP and have said quite a few times that the religious aspect does not concern me, that is not saying 'don't give me opinions'. I've also said I am interested in other opinions too, not just the religious aspect.

Amelia dyer was an actual real person though, in fact any of the name of such people are real people, there is not a scrap of evidence that the Cain in the bible was real. Its a choice to believe he was or wasn't. And my choice to believe he wasn't is no less valid than those that choose to believe he was.

Now, as said, I do not care about the religious aspect.

Opinions such as it sounds like a walking stick, it's chavvy etc are ones I will actually consider. Hence posting in here about the name. There are more opinions than just the religious one, clearly!

But Cain and Abel is such a culturally pervasive myth - it doesn't matter whether you believe, in a sense, unless he is only ever going to be associating with people who don't think 'mark of Cain' and banishment and murder. It's not at all comparable to names like Amelia that have been used much more frequently.

And even if you can ignore those associations, it just sounds like 'cane' which suggests beating or walking sticks, or cocaine or Novocain.

It reminds me of McCain and yes, the story in the Bible. BUT if you post choices on here, they'll often get ripped apart. I know mine did 😂

I don't get the whole 'naughty boy' name. It's stupid. A child isn't naughty because of its name. Other children's behaviour should have no bearing on what you want to name your child.

I love Cain but hate Kane.

I was friends with a lad called Kane in uni and he was a bellend.

I agree, completely ignore the bible's origins! My namesake was a prostitute in the bible so it's good we don't all follow in the footsteps of our originators!

If you’re proud of your Celtic history and you dislike Christianity - why not choose a Celtic name - they’re much nicer. It doesn’t really make sense.

I dislike Christianity and while there are names I like - like Gabriel and Jude (solely due to Hardy) - I couldn’t choose them personally because the Christian associations would annoy me every single day.

My thoughts are that there are nicer names out there. It does make me think of Cain & Abel, closely followed by the bloke from Emmerdale. I don't use the word chavvy as a rule but it sort of fits that bill too.

Oh and I'm a practicing Christian who runs uni bible study, volunteers with the sunday school and friday youth group and helps bake and serve in the church cafe and at voluntary events, no one at my church would bat an eyelid at the name.

It won't do him any harm to be called Cain, I know my auntie got around the connotation slightly by naming my cousin Caine to remove it slightly at least when it is wrote down. I think it's a great name for him, go with what you like.

My country's cultural history began way before Christianity, primarily celtic. Yes they probably would make that assumption as much as I would assume they are a bit daft for thinking Cain is a terrible name that should never be used because it featured in a book as a 'bad character'. They would be as unlikely to care about my assumption as I would theirs.

Anyways aside from the religious aspect which I've already stated doesn't matter one bit to me or my family, the other opinions are a bit chavvy (fair enough!) and nothing negative with the initials which is great because I hadn't actually considered the initials, so thanks for those other opinions too!

For example, amelia is the second most popular baby girl name at the moment. Yet amelia dyer is one of the most famous female serial killers in history, she murdered at least 200 infants in the 1800's! I don't assume anyone calling their new daughter amelia is calling her after that despicable woman however!
