The name Emerson

So I read through an old thread about this and I was a bit sad cause I really like the name..

Would you consider it more of a girl or a boy name?

What would a boy be called for short? We can only think of 'E' or 'Sonny'

I know it's traditionally a boys name but it's been used as a girls name over the past few years.

I really liked the name Emmeline/Emalyn for a girl if it was a girl so I don't know if that's what has drawn me to it.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea! Name suggestions that are similar would be appreciated too!

Middle name would be George

I like it but I love the characters in a room with a view that have the surname Emerson

I would give it to a boy tho as plenty of pretty Emma type names for girls.

Where I am from, this is a perfectly legitimate name. I'm sure it will be lovely on your child, regardless of the fact that it originated as a surname People on MN can be so snobby and narrow-minded sometimes.

Emerson Lake? There was a Youtuber a few years ago who named her daughter this, and didn't realise that there was a band called Emerson, Lake & Palmer Grin.

I have known two female Emersons and one male. I would probably assume an Emerson was a girl nowadays, but I don't think it's at Madison level yet i.e. it can still be used for a boy.

It's a sensible question, but Alison is an Old French diminutive of Alice. It's Alis+on, not Ali+son.

I think if I HAD to call a baby Emerson it would have to be a boy for me, but surnamey names are not really my thing.

Alison is also a girl's name ending in 'son'. It's not a rule.

Also to pp, Maddison is also very clearly a girls name and ends in son (but yes, I know the name was only 'invented' from the film Splash!)

Totally a boys name. I also thought of Emerson Fittipaldi. It's not a very pleasing name to the ear.

Emerson is very clearly a boys name as it ends in 'son'. I'm all for stretching boundaries on unisex names but I don't think you can on this instanceGrin

Nonetheless, I know a boy called Emerson who gets called Emmy.

I’ve only encountered the name Emerson once (I think it was what Cameron Diaz’s character called her baby in ‘What to expect when you’re expecting’?) and that baby was a girl. I think it sounds more like a girls name personally!

I quite like it, but I live somewhere where surnames are quite normal to use as first names. I'd assume boy but wouldn't be surprised to find a girl with the name Emerson. Not sure if it's your sort of thing, but would Beckett be an option?
