Really want a lovely middle name for Casper, something feminine, vintage, pretty etc.
Many thanks in advance and happy new year Smile

Please do your niece a favour and stop your sister using this name.

How on Earth would they do that? Given that the sister and her partner have picked the name in the first place I daresay they are unlikely to be swayed by public opinion. There are many folk who take pride in being a bit 'out there' with their name choices. If Casper Rose hates her name she can always change it when she's older. But I've heard worse tbh.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 02/01/2019 20:11

Still no no matter the reason - no one will say rose - it will just be Caspar the girl and that’s awful. Please do your niece a favour and stop your sister using this name. Really. Show her this thread if you most.
Use Caspar as the middle name if they must!

Mrsfrumble · 02/01/2019 19:32

I wonder if her partner’s mother had been born in, say, Charlotte NC or Enid OK and they were expecting a boy, how much sway sentimentality would hold?

Of course people can call their children whatever they like. But it’s pretty obvious that the reason giving boy’s names to girls is fashionable and giving girl’s names to boys is not is that we still associate male things with being cool and strong, and female things with being weak and lame.

quietmoon · 02/01/2019 18:49

And sorry for the late response, my new year resolution was to spend less time online Smile

Jasper?

ReaganSomerset · 02/01/2019 18:45

Hurrah! I liked that one best too.

quietmoon · 02/01/2019 18:44

Good grief I had no idea this name would generate such a response Shock if I had I would have clarified some things haha.

I'm not pregnant nor planning on naming a future child (boy or girl) Casper, my sister is having a girl and wants to name her Casper. The reason being that her partner's mother was born in Casper (USA) and it's sentimental for him. That's all Confused

They have settled on Casper Rose

Fine in theory Winona except that it is only EVER one way, and boys’ names that have been co-opted for girls quickly become unacceptable for boys.
Jaime (Hispanic version of James) is now almost exclusively a girl’s name in the English speaking world. See also Hilary, Evelyn, Esme and so on.
As posters upthread have said, it’s about perceived male superiority — you’re trying to ‘promote’ a girl by giving her a boy’s name — and it would ‘demote’ a boy if you gave him a girl’s name. Which is why it doesn’t happen.
It all feels like a retrograde step to me. What are we telling young girls with this..? That girls’ names are somehow secondary and boys’ names, (and by extension, boys) are better?

Bittermints · 02/01/2019 18:12

Very noticeable that the OP hasn't been back, which leads me to suspect this was a wind up from the start. But assuming this is serious, a parent may like a name, but they're not going to be the one going through life with that name, their child is. Parents have a responsibility to think about this. I wouldn't have thanked my parents for calling me Casper or Geoffrey or Barrie or Peter or any other name usually used for boys.

Bittermints · 02/01/2019 18:08

Jesse is a boy's name. It's in the Bible. Jessie is the girl's spelling.

Leslie spelled that way is far more often a boy's name. Lesley is the spelling usually used for girls.

There's no logic here, it's all arbitrary which names/spellings we use for girls and which for boys, but frankly who'd want to go through life constantly having to discuss their name? I wouldn't.

Winona1 · 02/01/2019 18:01

@GummyGoddess I don't think the OP is trying to make a point, I think she genuinely likes the name

GummyGoddess · 02/01/2019 17:59

Open minds won't prevent people making fun of the name. Children are not social experiments and shouldn't be used to make a point.

Winona1 · 02/01/2019 17:53

My point was.. if you want to call your daughter Barry or your son Catherine, it's at your complete discretion. People will have their opinion of course, but is there any need for nasty comments? Open your minds

calpop · 02/01/2019 17:50

Don't be ridiculous. there are men called Leslie. And boys called Jesse.

BertrandRussell · 02/01/2019 17:37

So why not Amelia for a boy?

barnet · 02/01/2019 17:35

Cameron is traditionally a boy’s name but no-one bats an eyelid at Cameron Diaz. Or Reece Witherspoon. Casper is fine for a girl. As pp suggested, Casper Grace is nice and funky.

BertrandRussell · 02/01/2019 17:35

Fascinating that nobody calls boys Susannah. And there was a thread recently worrying that Ellis sounded too feminine for a boy. Double standard, much?

Calzone · 02/01/2019 17:28

Ridiculous

Poor child

Winona1 · 02/01/2019 17:26

That sounds really nice @JessicaMary87

JessicaMary87 · 02/01/2019 16:35

I think Casper is a great name for a girl, what about something like Casper Grace?

People saying you are female and have a boys' name, do you mean a unisex name like Alex or Chris, or a nickname like Jack, or a crossover name like Jordan or Courtney, or a name like Geoffrey which has almost never been given to a girl?

miltonroad · 02/01/2019 11:43

Just spell it Kasper and pass her off as a Leicester goal keeper in training. Seriously? It’s awful for a girl.

Twelve8Ts · 02/01/2019 11:38

Also, maybe if people had more confidence when naming their children and others didnt sh*t all over their more unusual ideas then then we’d see a broader range of names and kids might not (supposedly) bully others and grown adults wouldn’t be left so ‘confused’.
Rant over, sorry everyone!

calpop · 02/01/2019 11:34

I like Casper for a girl. I also know a female Jasper, she doesnt get any hassle for it. I can't think if a good middle name though, sorry.
