Really want a lovely middle name for Casper, something feminine, vintage, pretty etc.
Many thanks in advance and happy new year Smile

Voltaire
Victor Hugo
Remarque

These are great men with the female middle name Marie/Maria. Marion is also used as a name for men. Marion Hugh ‘Suge’ Knight- not sure he’s a brilliant example of a human being but there you go. He’s got a great name though, you’ve gotta admit.

It was common for European Catholics to give their sons Maria as a middle name. Klaus Maria Brandauer is another example.

MommyShark89 · 16/01/2019 14:01

Hey! I don't mind the name... Don't listen to all the haters, don't worry about them, name your child what you want! A good middle name could be Marie!

Winona1 · 04/01/2019 17:32

@Twelve8Ts I assume from the reply, the commenter is very young. Glad you agree that there's no need to be mean on here! 😀

Twelve8Ts · 03/01/2019 21:58

Some people may have assumed I’m male over the years going by my email, but nobody has ever said to me ‘Oh my god I thought you were a man’, just as I wouldn’t admit to assuming someone was actually male/female etc. I’m oblivious to people’s assumtions, they’ve obviously been polite and kept it to themselves.

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2019 21:26

In mail circulars, gender is often guessed by the computer.

On forms and CVs you select titles but people often don’t read them.

I’ve been to doctors where they’ve called ‘Mr Larina oh I’m terribly sorry’.

At work I’d say around 70% of people I have email contact only with assume I’m male initially based on my name. I also receive work emails all the time from people whose gender I don’t know - Andrea is a recent one, Kim, Laurence, Lesley, Chris etc.

Twelve8Ts · 03/01/2019 21:15

@BackforGood Yeah I honestly haven’t. And by that I mean I can’t recall an instance of where I’ve had to explain if I’m male or female. For example if I’m on the phone people can hear that I’m female, if filling out forms you can select a title, on CV’s you can include a title. My gender isn’t regularly questioned! So personally it’s not ever been a problem. Believe it or not I actually have the same name as my boyfriend which is the only time it’s been tricky!

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2019 21:13

I'm really, really surprised at that. I have 3 dc. 2 of them are girls that have girls names, but, oddly, both of the 'shortenings' that their names have morphed in to are more commonly associated with boys' names. I've commonly been asked by friends, colleagues, or acquaintances that I might mention either of them to, about my 'boys

I expressed my surprise too for that same reason. I’m not sure that I believe her tbh.

My name has a unisex dim that I used for years. But eventually the relentless letters addressed to Mr, and the embarrassed people who had assumed I was male and worried that made them look sexist and apologised, when actually I was used to it and didn’t mind, got to me and I always use the long version on official documents.

I’ve always had the sense that despite being unisex there are far more men than women with the name, by number of people who assumed I was a bloke, and actually Betrand’s list confirms that. Up to 30 times more boys than girls depending on the year.

My niece was left stranded at an aurport once because the person meeting her assumed that Dr Sam Bertrandsniece has to be a man......

florascotia2 · 03/01/2019 20:40

itsallover - I presume you mean Renee? Sorry to be blunt but Rene is 100% a boy's name. I don't imagine you will ever have seen 'AlloAllo...

BackforGood · 03/01/2019 20:37

I have a boys name and I cannot remember one situation in all my life where I have had to explain if I’m male or female or where it’s left anyone confused

OP - my comment may not be to your taste or agree with your opinions but it is not absurd.
You posted here giving details of the name proposed for a baby girl. A name that has (FACT) been associated for the best part of 2000 years with boys only. So much so that it is irrevocably linked to one of the key religious myths/traditions associated with what is still - for good or ill (I have no allegiance) - to the traditional culture of the UK.

A name that has for 1500 years and more been identified as male. (Again, I am taking no sides; that's a fact.)

OF COURSE people who call themselves feminists and/or would wish for improved male/female equality are going to comment on this. It would be absurd to think that they would not.

But to repeat myself, you sister has every right to name her baby whatever she likes and to have her choice treated with respect. She does NOT have the right - apart from the normal rules of politeness - not to expect people to comment on it, though they should of course do that as graciously as possible.

BackforGood · 03/01/2019 19:50

ApplejackCriesOnTheInside has the best suggestion Grin

Beenherebefore · 03/01/2019 19:44

Oh reaaaallllY! Get over it / yourselves! SO boring. I said "you're a bit weird". Why do YOU have to have a problem with it? If the person I said it to wants to call me on it then she is free to do so. What's it got to do with anyone else? It isn't THAT bad a thing to say for the love of god! If I need to 'grow up", then you need to take a chill pill love!
If saying you're weird means I have to grow up, then no thanks I'll stay as I am. Soooo over the top!

Twelve8Ts · 03/01/2019 19:37

@Beenherebefore Think she’s baffled at the fact you can come on here and call someone weird and think that’s okay. It’s not nice and it’s childish. People comment on here about children bullying other children because of their names, you don’t like the name choice so you call her names? I agree, grow up.

Beenherebefore · 03/01/2019 19:23

@winona1 not sure what's so baffling but don't tell people to grow up, it's so immature!

TwigTheWonderKid · 03/01/2019 19:22

Bertrand that's really interesting. During the years they were born there were 323 boys and 179 girls with DS1's name and 7 boys and 23 girls with DS2's name.

quietmoon · 03/01/2019 19:22

@Flora I wouldn't ever suggest to my sister to reconsider her baby's name for the sake of feminism? The very thought is absurd to me.
I find it ludicrous to even bring feminism into this at all tbh.

@Beenherebefore

'You're a bit weird!'

I'm baffled. Grow up

onemorego2019 · 03/01/2019 19:18

I think you should switch it around Rose Casper. That way the name gets used and the link is still there for her partners husband x

florascotia2 · 03/01/2019 19:04

Thank you, Bertrand.

Quiet moon It is you sister's absolute right to call her baby what she chooses. But with the utmost respect, can I please ask you and she to at least consider the point that I was making above.

quietmoon · 03/01/2019 18:47

@Beenherebefore I've stated earlier in the thread that it is my sister's baby to be named Casper, not mine.

Baby is going to be called Casper Rose.

Beenherebefore · 03/01/2019 18:20

Why would you want a feminine, pretty middle name (that no-one will ever really know about), and give her a boy's christian name? You're a bit weird!

BertrandRussell · 03/01/2019 18:15

@TwigTheWonderKid- i’ll quite understand if you can’t be arsed- but might you feel like putting the names into this and seeing if the names really are unisex in usage? It’s amazing how many names that appear to be actually aren’t.
