Can I use a name a friend had just used?

Our baby boy is due any day and we've gone through lists and lists of names and both really stuck on Hugo. We both really love it and it goes with middle & last name perfectly.

The only problem is that a girl I work with has called her little boy Hugo too just a few weeks ago.

We don't see her out of work and are just work & Facebook friends but I can't help feel she might think we are coping.

What do you think?

Of course you can use it. Don't expect her to be happy about it though.

But Hugo is pretty popular so it's not like she won't already know of any others.

Littlebird88 · 29/12/2018 21:32

yes use it.

Moonstoned · 29/12/2018 21:30

Your title is misleading, so — not only is she not a friend, she’s not even a close work colleague, in which case call your baby whatever you like. Once either of you switch jobs, you’ll never see one another again.

stellarfox · 29/12/2018 16:48

Use it but I'd probably just message her to say by the way this looks like the only name we both agree on at the moment so we might end up with a Hugo too!

redyawn · 29/12/2018 11:29

Just use the name. Don't feel guilty either. For what it's worth, your colleague may even be flattered - I would be.

AJPTaylor · 29/12/2018 11:27

Honestly, you probably won't even know her in a few years. Think ahead 10 years. " We were going to call you Hugo but someone, can't remember who, called their child it. That's why you are called Reginald"

bridgetreilly · 29/12/2018 11:24

Definitely use it, and tbh, I wouldn't even bother sending her a message.

I don't really know why it would matter if she thought you were copying, either.

HTKS · 29/12/2018 09:41

Several of my colleagues had baby girls this year and they've all called them Margo. No hard feelings anywhere.

Icklepup · 29/12/2018 09:40

Use it

Flamingosnbears · 29/12/2018 09:19

I wouldn't want to personally how about Hugh

Princesspeachy0 · 29/12/2018 08:33

Use it!!

Astronica · 29/12/2018 03:46

I don't see any problem using this great name at all. It's not like it's a very unusual name - Hugo is in the top 50 in the UK now I think.

NooMe · 28/12/2018 23:05

Yes, use it! She doesn't seem like a close friend at all and even if she was, friends come and go. There's no point forever regretting not using the name you love.

ForAMinuteThere · 28/12/2018 22:30

I would. Seriously are you going to be colleagues together forever? It's a lovely name that isn't totally rare so she would have know they'd be others when she named him.

Bit jealous too as I love it!

Crunchymum · 28/12/2018 13:21

Unfriend her?

Then she'll have no knowledge of your childs name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 28/12/2018 13:12

If she’s not close enough to drop an inbox message to then I definitely wouldn’t worry about it! Doubtful you’ll be colleagues forever but you’ll be shouting Hugo up the stairs for the next 18+ years! Use it!! :)

Itisnearlybedtimeyet · 28/12/2018 12:49

I would!

Confusedbeetle · 28/12/2018 12:15

I wouldnt

Notthisoneagain · 28/12/2018 12:00

Thanks everyone. I just don't want her to think we are copying.
I'm on maternity leave now so would look odd if I messaged her on Facebook to tell her what name we are using seeing as we haven't told anyone else. As I said, we only chat in passing at work.

Use it anyway, it's fine Smile

Bigonesmallone3 · 28/12/2018 00:16

Just use it, what can she say..
If she confronts u say that's always been my name for a boy and we don't mix in the same circles anyway

Didyeeaye · 28/12/2018 00:13

I would mention it to her so there's no hard feelings but would still go with Hugo if that's the name you both love. Work colleagues change all the time. You'll be saying your DS' name the rest of your life

Yakadee · 27/12/2018 20:02

I would. She's not a close friend so I don't think it matters x

Ourmaud · 27/12/2018 19:52

I called my baby something pretty unusual (so I thought), we come from a family of outlandish names so I was trying to keep up the tradition and two people from my social media have since named their children the exact same name, first and middle name. I was slightly irritated at first but it’s just one of those things. She will probably just laugh it off and not give it a second thought.

costacoffeecup · 27/12/2018 19:49

It's quite a common name at the moment so I don't think it matters tbh.
