Roux (French)- boy

I'm looking for thoughts on the name Roux ---pronounced row. My great uncle has this middle name and we are looking for something that shows our French Heritage.

Do people just think of roux sauce? Like it/hate it?

I've only ever heard it pronounced Roo too, and that would be consistent with the usual French pronunciation rules. I thought of the guy in Chocolat too, but I think it's a nickname in his case. He plays a very small part in one of JH's other books, in which I'm almost sure it's mentioned that his real name is actually Michel!

Honestly, I think if you can’t pronounce it then you are probably a bit far removed from your French heritage to go for a French first name. Especially one that everyone knows is a sauce. Sorry!

People will get used to it very quickly, even if there dirst thought is “sauce”, they'll get over it. It’s meaningful, and a family name; I’d go for it Smile Get the pronunciation ironed out, though.

Are you saying it row to rhyme with “Low” or row to rhyme with “now”? Do you think family pronunciation has corrupted it from “roo”?

Pick something else. There are heaps of super French names, don't go for food.

Definitely pronounced Roo. Lovely boy at my DD's school named Roux. Not a name I'd have thought of but he makes it a very cool name.

Yep, sauce, then Michel and Michel Jr.

And it’s definitely pronounced roo. Every time someone asks his name he’ll then have to spell it. Not a good plan.

It is pronounced roo as others have said. I thought it was also the masculine term for a redhead (ginger)

How do you even pronounce row?

Row as in boat is pronounced different to row as in argument.

If there are different ways for the phonetic spelling you’ve not a hope with the original.

It's pronounced Roo (in French) and is a surname - possibly your relative's mother's maiden name? (That's a reasonably common naming habit tomstick that in the middle)

I've never come across it as a first name, and don't really take to it, sorry.

It's not pronounced row (either to rhyme with no or now), it's pronounced roo. And it would be a very weird choice for a boy. I think even in France it's a surname, not a first name.
