Nye vs Huw

Looking for a welsh name for a baby boy which will be brought up in England.

Front runners are Huw or Nye (we would put aneurin on birth certificate but would use nn of Nye most of the time).

What do people think? Any other suggestions welcomed x

I knew of the name, yes, but was pronouncing it incorrectly. I actually think how it's said is lovely. I really, really like Nye too.

I'd never heard of Aneurin and it does make me think of aneurysms and Anadin. I would have mispronounced it too.
I love Huw.

I love Aneurin / Nye.

The aneurism thing would never occur to me - as you've said it's pronounced differently. Plus it's not the sort of thing that kids would ever notice so no risk of teasing because of it.

Nye is awesome! I think if he's mostly going by Nye pronunciation won't be a problem. Although clearly a lot of people are unfamiliar with Aneurin!

Huw is okay. It feels like a posh boy name to me - although your spelling is nicer.

Aneurin was on our short list LOVE it. May use it if we have another. Huw is nice too though.

I love Huw, but would want the welsh pronunciation. I know it’s fairly subtle but i don’t like the way it sounds in most english accents.

For those who think aneurin sounds like a headache tablet or aneurysm - out of interest was it a name you had heard of before the thread? Just wondering how common it will be to come up against this! It's said very differently to aneurysm so may be more of a problem written down. Thanks

Aneurin reminds me of aneurysm. Not good.

Nye reminds me of Bill Nye. Not a bad thing, but it seems like a surname to me.

Huw is good.

Not meant to be offensive. You should see some of the things said about one of my children's names on here, I understand it's just opinion though. We all think different things!

Thanks for all the replies guys - yes a bit worried about spelling and people's pronouciation of aneurin - (not said like aneurysm)

Nye would be said Ni (Sounds like hi but with an n and full name is a-ni-Rin) ...... Like Nye bevan the founder of the nhs.....

Thanks @Tony2 it is a lovely name! I like the simplicity of Huw and wonder if that'll be simpler in England but I also quite like the idea of a name that can be shortened and has a longer version to go on birth certificate (not everyone's cup of tea to have longer names which are rarely used but it is my preference)

It's so hard! You're committing them to a lifetime of their name! Both options they're going to be spelling out lots in England 🙄

I like them both a lot, but prefer Aneurin/Nye, possibly because of the Nye Bevan link.

If he's living in England I'd say Huw. It's a nice name and you won't run into pronounciation issues

I like both. Nice, short neat names. I like Huw better than Hugh, and Nye is very cool. Aneurin is great, love it. Also like Rhys as a pp suggested.

I'm not sure I'm allowed to say this, but my son is Aneurin. Welsh heritage etc, although freely admit Nye Bevan was inspiration, being lefty parents. The new years eve thing never seemed a connotation, honourable or golden seems to be the etymology. But he is Nye, he could be no other, and he is indeed honourable. We love it.

I live in Wales and I know Aneurin but have never seen Nye before. How is it pronounced?
To be honest my first thought on seeing it was Bill Nye the science guy.

I don't think it's a specifically insulting Welsh names thing. The baby names board on MN does encourage opinions. I have seen lots of threads with names (not Welsh) that posters say sound like medications/illnesses etc. It's just an opinion on the name.
