Makes me wonder what names the nay-sayers like? To me, Ethel is quirky and feminine, fresh and a pleasure to say.

If Ethel was a colour it would be brown. It’s drab. There is nothing nice or pretty about it. It’s on a level with Vera or Maud or Doreen or Barbara. Names that make me think ‘poor child’ when I hear them.

I’m not a fan of vintage names. It’s like a competition to find the worse name possible and name your child it.

I can see the appeal. I like its ancientness. But it really does have an old lady vibe that I'm finding hard to overlook.

I love the meaning too. 'Diminutive of Etheldreda, from the Old English name Aethelthryth, meaning noble and strength.'
Such a strong name, but with softness too. It'll never be widely used but for me that's a plus point. There are oodles of the traditionally 'pretty' old lady named. Pick a shrewish one! And your daughter will make it her own.

I think it sounds lovely and I don't understand where the negative connotation comes from (I didn't like it almost instinctively until I really thought about it after seeing someone name their baby it on a TV show). I think people associate it with elderly women but I don't see why that's a bad thing and loads of vintage names are making a comeback
