Elsa and Olaf

Both names are lovely and it would be great to carry on your husbands family names, however, there I absolutely NO way of avoiding the Frozen connection. I think 95% of people would hear "Elsa and Olaf" and think of the film. Its a film that will be watched and thought of for years to come. It's a lovely film, so it would have a negative association, but you may get some people laugh at the name choices/find them very comical or think that you've named them after the film.
I would use one of the names (the one that has the most significance for your family) and maybe think of an alternative for the other name x

Yeah you can kind of get away with names but being the kid isn't fun. Postman pats cat was all I got in nursery and primary school. I don't think he's as big a deal now but it used to really annoy me to the point I went to school and told everyone I had changed my name. I hadn't so it didn't really work out but it's really annoying to be that kid

I work with a Norwegian guy named Olaf and all he ever gets is comments about Frozen and Snowmen etc. He’s pretty fed up of it now

I'm gonna go against the grain here (and I've never seen Frozen).

Elsa is pretty but is really similar to the whole Ella, Elsie, Ellie, Elle, etc. trend that we've been going through in the last few years. I guess that's why it's been popular in this thread!

Olaf is really cool. It's on my list if I have any more DS. It's a strong name.

Ola is definitely a boy's name in Sweden.

Elsa is beautiful and definitely should be used if you like it.

I would definitely reconsider Olaf though. Perhaps as a middle name if it absolutely must be used?

We have a little Olaf at school. His family are Swedish too. He's just the most lovely little guy, so I'm hugely biased towards that name now, plus I think it's a very masculine name well suited for an adult too. Definitely go for it!

I’d go for it. Once a child has grown into their name then they own it and when you hear it you think of that person rather than popular culture. I am from a heavily Scandi influenced part of Scotland though, so Scandi names are very normal here.

How about Ola for a girl? Used in eastern Europe but extremely close to Olaf obviously. Also used in the northern isles of Scotland.

Elsa is lovely but I really would think of the snowman from frozen with Olaf. Elsa you could definitely get away with even with the Frozen connection.

@BackforGood I disagree, Elsa would be far far more connected with the film than Olaf. There's Elsa merchandise everywhere and little girls want to be Elsa. Olaf doesn't have that same following.
And yes- people will think you are MASSIVE Disney fans!

In the UK (and I presume USA ??) Olaf would be associated with the snowman from Frozen by almost everyone.
If you are living in Scandanavia it will be different, but in the UK, he would just constantly get people referring to it, and would get very fed up of it.

I think Elsa slightly less so - depends a bit on how keen on Disney people are. It is a longstanding popular film for little people and very well merchandised and promoted with fancy dress, toys, and party themes many years on from the film coming out.
I'm old enough to think 'Elsa' should be a lion I still know of the film and characters though my dc were "too old" for it when it came out.

Is he Norweigan? Names aren't the same in all of Scandinavia. If you like the names then I'd say it's fine, but people will associate those names with Frozen.

They are really cute names but people will assume you are MASSIVE Disney fans. You should definitely watch the film as people will associate the characters with your child.

Are you living in Scandinavia? If so then absolutely fine as the names are so common there. If not, then I would be wary of Elsa in particular. I know 4 (no exaggeration?) Elsa's who have actually changed their name (aged from baby to 4 years!) because the film association just became too much to handle. There's little girls dressed as Elsa everywhere and with another film coming out next year the hype isn't going to fade

Elsa is a nice name (and lots of people have names connected with films/famous people/characters etc. If you like it, go for it.

Elsa is a nice name but I absolutely would not use Olaf . It will forever be associated with Frozen I reckon. To be fair Elsa is the same imo but not quite as bad. It's like calling your kid Ariel , the little mermaid connection is made straight away

I think the strong female character means the film won’t disappear.

I like Elsa but Olaf makes me think of a clumsy snowman.

I do know aurora, belle, jasmine so it isn’t that unusual

When I worked in reception class the children used to all play at being Elsa and Olaf and all the rest and sign the songs from the film. That was 2013.

The nursery children I work with now still talk about Frozen.
