ABCDE

There is an article running today in the Daily Fail about a girl named Abcde - apparently it’s pronounced ‘ab-city’. Having worked with hundreds of children in my career, it’s not often I come across a name that is completely unique to me. So Mumsnetters, do any of you know an Abcde?

It's a little stupid for the mother to name her child Abcde, just as 381 others in the USA have done, without first consulting the wise here on MumsNet.

Booboostwo · 01/12/2018 12:44

At least naming DC2 should be very easy! I wonder how they will pronounce FGHIJ.

blackfadder · 30/11/2018 23:56

Registrars should be able to ban parents from giving their kids dickish names

Singletomingle · 30/11/2018 23:55

If you give your child a stupid name you have to expect people to laugh! If I saw this I'd assume it was a mistake and laugh. The mother is crazy even her pronunciation doesn't make sense.

Lou0219 · 30/11/2018 23:48

No never heard of it, imo it’s silly & nobody will know how to pronounce it exactly. Confused

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 30/11/2018 22:55

^^ that was quicker than I thought Grin

No, sanity, she really doesn't.

sanityisamyth · 30/11/2018 22:48

A friend had a La-a at her work (pronounced la dash ah) . . .

Zazia · 30/11/2018 22:36

I think LaLa sounds sophisticated compared to Abcde.

Mamaryllis · 30/11/2018 15:32

I don’t mind the sound of ‘absedee’ which really is just like ‘rhapsody’ without the rh.
But spelling it abcde is hilarious. Employee should have internalized the hysteria though. Would have been entirely within rights to check it matched passport or gov ID though, because it DOES look like a placeholder until the actual name is provided.
My airline staff would have been all over it in the crew room, but would hopefully have kept it together on the customer side.

Booboostwo · 30/11/2018 15:27

Abside is not too bad...especially compared to Abcde!

PurdysChocolate · 30/11/2018 14:47

This name is so ridiculous I actually felt angry at the parents. Poor kid.

TheWiseWomansFear · 30/11/2018 14:45

It's ab-si-dee, not ab-city.

Sounds vaguely African, though I don't know any.

@Moominfan Hunter is a common American boys name...

DRE56322 · 30/11/2018 11:40

It sounds like she named her poor child and people might mishear it as Obesity.

WomanOfTime · 30/11/2018 11:06

/Absidy/ isn't the worst made-up name I've heard. It sounds fine, as those sorts of names go. Spelling it Abcde is ridiculous.

twattymctwatterson · 30/11/2018 10:58

It's a ridiculous name but the airline worker should definitely be sacked. Publicly shaming a five year old is appalling

MrDonut · 30/11/2018 09:58

I must admit I laughed at the idea that the parents were seemingly shocked and offended that someone was taking the piss out of the name.

I actually quite like XYZ. How about Querty?

GrumpyOlderBloke · 30/11/2018 09:54

Is her sister called Qwerty and brother Uiop?

French cousin Azerty?

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 09:46

Not surprised the airline staff member found it hilarious - hope they're not disciplined too harshly!

Of course they should!!! It’s giving the company a bad name. You can take the piss in private not in front of the customer

PeevedOfPortishead · 30/11/2018 09:45

moomin lots of Hunters in the far north of Scotland. Fewer perhaps within the M25.

Soubriquet · 30/11/2018 09:44

I saw this article too

Whilst I think the name is stupid, I also think the worker was extremely unprofessional. Fair enough to laugh, but you do it in private. Not pointing at the child and laughing.

Cosmoa · 30/11/2018 09:43

I don't think la-a is an urban myth yanno...

greathat · 30/11/2018 09:27

No not now. Damn inability to edit

greathat · 30/11/2018 09:27

Not even unique. Some parents should just be told now

EmmaJR1 · 30/11/2018 07:50

I read this and just remembered how much thought and effort went in to deciding my children's names, it was exciting and enjoyable. It makes me think the parents weren't that bothered and couldn't be arsed to discuss it so just said "oh just call her ABCDE"

Poor girl

bluetongue · 30/11/2018 07:43

I thought this was a bit of an urban myth, like la-a Shock

Poor kid. Hopefully she has decent middle name she can use or changes it as soon as she can.
