I'm wondering why it's not more popular?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ZebraKid71 · 27/11/2018 23:01

It's an 80s name to me, I know loads in their 30s.

But I do like it, and I don't know a single Samantha under the age of 18.

Stickmanslittleleaf · 27/11/2018 22:07

I like it, she'll never have to spell her name and there are lots of nicknames. I named my 1yr old after his dad which is another 'classic' name but has lots of nicknames. Think Robert, Rob, Robbie, Bobbie, Bert, Bertie. All of which are natural and can be used and interchanged. She probably won't be in a class full of them these days but it won't be a hinderance for her as people will generally know the name when she says it.

Novasglow · 27/11/2018 21:50

My sister's name, paired with Alexandra as a middle name. I think it's lovely :)

DontCallMeCharlotte · 27/11/2018 21:43

Sam's mates would be Pam, Michelle, Debbie, Jo and Sharon

You forgot Karen and Sandra!

(Not sure about Pam - too old I'd have thought?).

Samantha is very sweet. Don't like Sam for a girl.

CloudPop · 27/11/2018 21:39

I love it. Bring it back

TroysMammy · 27/11/2018 21:25

We had a tortoise in 1973 and named her Samantha. She's still going strong.

My sister's friend called her daughter Samantha knowing fully well the name of our much loved tortoise. Her daughter wasn't named after the tortoise, she just loved the name.

Ruddle91 · 27/11/2018 21:23

I'm in my 20s. I know a few Samantha's my age or younger. I don't know anyone under 45 called Tracey though! I do know one Sharon in their 30s.

greendale17 · 27/11/2018 21:19

Dated and right up there with Lisa, Donna and Tracey

loveshinealight · 27/11/2018 21:18

Oh please go for it. It is lovely and as others have said, it makes a refreshing change from Ava, Eva and Isla!

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2018 21:01

It's fine, and I also like Amanda.
A nice change from the Olivias, Amelias, Avas, Evies etc

esesme · 27/11/2018 20:43

I had a cat called Samantha, we used to call her Sammy, she was a very lovely cat....hope that helps

DramaAlpaca · 27/11/2018 20:23

Hmm. It's OK. It's quite dated, to me It's a 70s name as the ones I know are from that era. It's certainly not a classic name as someone said upthread. I think it goes with the likes of Amanda, Angela & Deborah.

Bananalanacake · 27/11/2018 20:16

beautiful, but mine has the german pronounciation of SamanTa, though it is spelt the usual way.

Fulltimemummy85 · 27/11/2018 20:11

Its fine, very 90's but a nice name like Sarah x

drying · 27/11/2018 19:42

Haha this is a generational thing I think. No Gillians around when I was at school with a few Samanthas

AuntieStella · 27/11/2018 19:40

I agree with both NiceViper and drying, and would add Gillian (where have they all gone?) and Amanda

drying · 27/11/2018 19:36

Where I'm from Sam's mates would be Catherine, Louise, Adele, Amy, Nicola, Jennifer etc

NiceViper · 27/11/2018 19:34

I was basing my view on my classmates (big, all-girls school in the Midlands)

It could easily have been different in other regions.

AuntieStella · 27/11/2018 19:31

Tracey and Samantha definitely overlapped when they peaked! I was at school with quite a few of both.

Sam's mates wouid be Pam, Michelle, Debbie, Jo and Sharon

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/11/2018 19:29

I also wouldn’t put it in a list with Tracey and Donna!

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/11/2018 19:29

I know one who’s 30. It’s not my personal taste but I like it and like that she wouldn’t be one of 5 in her class. Solid and classic in my book. Definitely nicer than all the Olivia’s, Isla’s, Ava’s that are everywhere I agree.

drying · 27/11/2018 19:27

Samantha is no way near like 'Tracey'!!

I know loads of Samanthas who are in their 30s

NiceViper · 27/11/2018 19:26

Samantha's are aged 45-55(ish) when it was considered The Most Attractive name (which in early 80s tabloid speak meant 'sexy page 3 name' ) Sam Fox is of that era.

I think it's a pretty name, but all mg with Donna, Joanne, Tracey etc it's not quite ripe for a revival. So if you want a name that everyone knows is a name IYSWIM but isn't likely to be the next big thing (for another good few years at leading) then this could be a good choice.

junebirthdaygirl · 27/11/2018 19:18

Know one and she is called Sammy full time.

Bacardi101 · 27/11/2018 19:11

The only reason I don’t like it is because I was in school with one and she was horrific so I think my opinion has been skewed!
