Absolutely unfounded, this belief that unusual spellings make life difficult for a child or grown up....bullies make life for people, ignorant and mean people who have brought their children up to think name calling is acceptable make life difficult for others....not having a different spelling, not even having a totally made up name, this suggestion that one is inferior and blighted is absolute codswallop. Some MN characters need to have a long hard think about what they say here. Ridiculous.

FFS, she will not be burdened or scarred for life because her (beautiful) name has an unusual spelling.
My name (albeit common) has a different spelling and yes sometimes I have to correct people but it hasn't had an impact on my life Hmm
OP - trust the decision yourself and DH made with her name when she was born and just enjoy your DD, it goes fast and she will give you plenty more to worry about once she is walking and into everything Grin

I know a Noemi (Italian version of Naomi, pronounced No-Amy, she is from an Italian family) and she regularly has to spell her name and correct people who call her Naomi. To be fair kids get it right, it’s adults who get it wrong. I think the kids just accept people’s names as their names but adults have more of an idea of the name they’re expecting to see/hear so a more thrown by variants

If Niomi is the right spelling in your language or culture (like Noemi in Italian) then stick with it. Otherwise I personally would probably change it to Naomi. I’m my head I’m saying Niomi Nee-omi although I’m guessing it should be Ny-omi?

Niomi (Ny-omi) sounds nicer than Naomi (Nay-Omi) imo

Honestly I think Niomi is much nicer sounding (and looking) than Naomi. If you're pronouncing it as nye-oh-me, then definitely keep the Niomi spelling. She might have to spell it to some people but speaking as someone who has to do that a lot, it isn't so bad.

Thanks for all responses, I like the idea of seeing how it goes. It's definitely her name now so the thought of changing it (even just the spelling) makes me feel funny. @lebkuchenlover yes my name has 3 different ways of spelling it and my parents gave me the longest version but I wouldn't want to change it

Will see how she gets on with it. She could spell it Naomi when she was older if she prefers

@EmmaJR1 thank you. Yes the Naomi's I know always get asked if it's Na or Ni so I think it is more common than I realised.

Lots of names have to be spelled out eg.
Clare, Claire
Kathryn, Catherine,
Finley, Finlay
etc
etc

Its no big deal, and it least Niomi will be pronounced correctly.

Niomi or Naomi you will be correcting spelling and pronunciation!

My daughter is Naomi and I'm constantly spelling her name and saying "it's NA-Omi not NI-omi" when people say it wrong. I really dislike the Ni pronunciation but that's my choice.

You said you think you have pnd and apparently name regret is a sign of it so why not give yourself some time.

I like Niomi - there’s Niomi Smart who is a YouTube blogger. She will have to correct people miscalling her Naomi but I think Niomi is nice!

I knew someone Hungarian with that spelling. It's fine, people will get used to it.

If you want it to be pronounced as Nye-o-me then I’d keep the spelling because to me it’s clear that that is how you’d pronounce it. If you change it to Naomi then she will constantly be telling people that it’s not pronounced Nay-o-me. Pronunciation is more important than spelling in my book! I think it’s a lovely name too

Yes, you can change it on her birth certificate before a year. But after that you can get a deedpoll. It's 20 mins on the internet and about £26, or something like that.

So keep it. See what happens. And if she's frustrated by it when she gets to school/hits her teens/whenever, help her change the spelling then. It really doesn't have to be a drama.

I have a name which spelt in an unusual way. It has caused me a lifetime of irritation - people always spell it incorrectly or pronounce it incorrectly. I have had to get multiple certificates and official documents changed over the years. I would encourage all parents to think about experiences that a child will have with a name throughout their lifetime, rather than focusing on what they like themselves! I’m not trying to upset you OP, but it is something to think about.

@lebkuchenlover thank you. Yes that's the way we pronounce it. Everyone who's heard it/seen it loves it, just getting myself in a state but also don't feel like I could change it to anything else now as it suits her and I like that it's a bit more special

I'm sure that most people will quickly learn how to spell Niomi. I quite like it, actually. I'd pronounce it Nye-omi. Is that how it's pronounced?

Whereas I'd pronounce Naomi as Nay-omi.

I also think you should consider changing it. I’d be unsure whether it were pronounced ‘nye-oh-mee’ or ‘nee-oh-mee’

@Monday55 I have a relatively average name yet always get asked about spelling, never bothered me. I think that's common with any name now!

Sorry but I would change it. She will have to spell it every time she spells her name. I have never seen it spelt like that.
