Georgie - which long name?

We’ve decided on Georgie for dd2 and are now trying to decide which long name to use on the birth certificate (please no lectures about not giving your child a name you’re not going to call them by, it’s what we want to do and what we’ve decided on).

I really dislike Georgina - I just hate the ‘Gina’ part of it.

So that leaves us with Georgia and Georgiana. We both instinctively prefer Georgiana, but we’re wondering if others would consider it a little pretentious?

If it’s relevant, our dd1 is called Victoria, nn Vika (the Russian shortening as dh is half Russian and we both hate Vicky and Torie!)

Georgiana was your first thought and a perfectly lovely name for the certificate.

Georigiana is great. Georgia is very Essex now. Georgette is ghastly.

I vote for Georgiana, like Mr Darcy's sister - it's so glamorous and lovely.

Georgina is fine but it's a very 80s name. When I was a kid everyone seemed to have a little sister called Georgina.

I like Vika, hadn't heard that before. The Russians I've known went by Vitya instead.

I prefer Georgia.

Georgiana is too fussy for me plus it has more than one pronunciation which is something I steer clear of in names.

I like Georgette best. I don't dislike Georgiana but I think people will often read it as Georgina anyway, because that's more familiar - but that might not be relevant if you intend to call her Georgie all the time.

I agree with you about needing a long name. Georgie is not a name in itself.
I would probably do Georgia but both work.

So it’s Georgia or Georgiana. I think we’re leaning towards Georgiana at the moment - it just seems to ‘go’ better with Victoria.

It’s not as bad as Alfie or Millie, I grant you, but it’s still not a proper name.

Plus, given that we already have a Victoria, I think it would be weird having one full name and one nickname.

It would be like having an Elizabeth and a Maddie. Or a Genevieve and an Annie. They just don’t go.

I don't get why you would lengthen it if she is going to be called Georgie! Just call her Georgie I say its lovely x

I have a Georgia who, as a PP said, is called Georgie affectionately yet George by her peers.
I call her 'Little Gee' for convenience because her elder sister's name also begins with a G. So instead of running the gauntlet of getting their names wrong i have a little Gee and a big Gee Blush
FWIW I love Georgiana, I think Georgia has become too mainstream now.

We have a Georgia and we have had so many lovely comments on her name, many more so than her sister has had who has a top 10 name. I’m not keen on Georgiana to be honest (bit posh for us!) - there’s no reason why Georgia couldn’t affectionately be known as Georgie.

I love both Georgia and Georgiana, with nn Georgie. I also love Georgette, which seems a more distinctive option. I think they all work well next to sister Victoria/Vika. Out of your 2 options, Georgia just has the edge for me as it feels more feisty and user-friendly in that it's shorter and easier to pronounce. All great options though.

I much prefer Georgina to Georgiana (too long and too many different pronunciations).
Georgette is a bit more unusual and rather pretty. Georgia is perfectly fine.
Georgie on the BC is OK.

I'm a Georgie (Georgina) but to be honest I really don't like Georgiana, it sounds a bit pretentious! I don't get called George - I used too but I made it known about 15 years ago I actually prefer Georgie. My mum still calls me Georgina when I'm in trouble of course! And a DGP calls me Gina.

I would definitely say Georgia out of the two. Georgiana is quite nice, but a bit OTT, plus there are two pronunciations.

Georgette is not an attractive name.
Georgina is lovely though, IMO.

Georgiana is super. And kind of a fun bonus if you intend to mostly call her Georgie.
There is an alternate pronunciation Jaw-Jane-Uh, which is how the Duchess of Devonshire would have pronounced it, but that's quite specific to the accent of the eighteenth-century Spencers. Some people use it but the -arna ending is the standard.

Georgette is another word for flannel. Don't call her that.

Though, I agree, she will be George regardless by her teens. All of the Georgias I know get Georgie affectionately, but George in their everyday life.
