Suggestions for shortening ‘Electra’

HeebeeJeebies · 09/11/2018 13:05

We love the name Electra. But would rather not use Elle/Ellie-type shortened versions ourselves due to other family member’s names.

Any suggestions for shortening this?

so my middle name is electra... i use it all the time as my first name is way too long and complicated, Personally I use ellie but i think Lex is quite cool :)

TheSeedsOfADream · 07/09/2020 20:17

Zombie thread.

Trifoglio · 07/09/2020 14:55

Yeah I call mine 'Elec' or 'Lec' but I know they're awful so I do it ironically. I like her having a unique name either way though. I get that it sounds better for an adult, although I couldn't imagine her being called anything else now. Also she's half Italian and 'Elettra' is slightly more common in Italy.

Unseeliequeen · 07/09/2020 11:49

Just call her Electra? Or have it as mn

theruffles · 07/09/2020 10:58

I know an Electra and her name is shortened to Elec (which I think is awful but that's besides the point!)

Astronica · 07/09/2020 05:30

Lovely choice.
Maybe already mentioned but possible short forms: Lex, Elo, Ettie, Etta, Lele, Letty. Letty or Lex are my favourites for Electra. I also like nns like Tiggy for anything with a 't' in it!

SeanCailleach · 06/09/2020 21:09

For some reason the Electra I went to school with was known as Sparkle. Gorgeous name.

Trifoglio · 06/09/2020 20:37

My 2 year old is called Electra. I call her 'Lec', because it's funny, and soooo many kids are called 'Elle' and 'Ella'. I think it's a badass name, and beautiful sounding. I researched the Electra complex extensively, and my take on it was that she was motivated by a platonic love for her father, and I see her as a force for justice. She is not the female equivalent of Oedipus even though people think she is. As for stripper associations, yeah, ok, but this bothers me little because it's not a chavvy name devoid of heritage, and my kid is strong enough to forge her own identity.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 09/11/2018 22:16

Lecky.

Like electricity.

BikeRunSki · 09/11/2018 21:32

Tara

iismum · 09/11/2018 21:31

I like it, a good classical name

There are a lot of good classical names, but I don't think this is one of them - the connotations are horrible ... I think I would feel pretty weird if my parents named me something with a background like that.

Cherries101 · 09/11/2018 21:24

I wouldn’t punish a child with this name. Too much teasing potential.

Creepyexgirlfriend · 09/11/2018 21:17

Why shorten it if you like it?

TatianaLarina · 09/11/2018 21:11

Electra is great.

Lettie for a nn? Elka, Elkie.

girlandboy · 09/11/2018 20:21

Sorry, I used to work with aircraft. The Lockheed Electra specifically, so I can't get past that.
Also please don't shorten it to Leccy/Leccie either because the leccy man comes to read the electricity meter.

FekkoThePenguin · 09/11/2018 20:06

Lexie - but it's quite a tragic name isn't it? You could say 'shocking' boom! boom! 🦊

MrsRubyMonday · 09/11/2018 20:03

Going from the -tra, maybe could swing Tara? It would be a push though. Honestly, I would just use Electra until she chose her own or something fell into place naturally

QuilliamCakespeare · 09/11/2018 19:32

Reminds me of one of the trains in that rather dull musical. Starlight Express!

SoftSheen · 09/11/2018 19:29

Why do you need to shorten it?

^^I agree that Allegra would be a great alternative. Very classy.

Racecardriver · 09/11/2018 19:26

Yeah, Electra complex just can’t move beyond that. What about Allegra instead?

JC4PMPLZ · 09/11/2018 19:24

Ekkie

earlgreymarl · 09/11/2018 19:20

Round here it would definitely get shortened to leccy .

Polkasq · 09/11/2018 19:18

Electra is a fab name. You could have Lettie, Ettie or Etta as nickname.

LordPickle · 09/11/2018 15:01

😮 Electra? How cruel.

Andtheresaw · 09/11/2018 14:58

A nn doesn't have to be a shortening of her name. You can call her anything.
Boo
Tiger
etc
