Sweet girls names that will age well

So, I am due in a couple of weeks and DH and I cannot agree on a name :S DH likes classic names like Florence, Beatrice and Madeline. I like sweet names like Poppy, Daisy and Molly.

DH says that the names I like work well for a baby or little girl, but not so well for an adult and might restrict her career options. I can see his point but think that may not be the case in 25 years time. Whilst our debate continues, can anyone think of sweet names/names with a sweet nickname that are also classic and leave open more conservative career options?

I do like Charlotte (Charlie) but we are currently in Australia and it has been decisively #1 here for a few years now.

You also need to remember that the names you associate with being more "professional" etc now are going to be those names that were popular for babies 20/30 years ago.

The names on your list are all really popular now, so in 20/30 years from now there will be loads of adults with these names being surgeons/barristers/politicians etc... Your DH is suggesting that in the future huge swathes of the population will be excluded from professional jobs!

Had Tabitha, Maia and Estella picked out for a girl, but I'm having a boy! Think they work well as a child as well as an adult.

We have a Cecilia and use nn Cee Cee so that could be one to consider.
Also if your husband likes Florence how about Floss while she is little?

Sorry if I'm duplicating any of the above.

Maybe a 'y' name that's a bit longer, like Briony or Bethany?

Or would Maggie work instead of Maddie? Maybe short for Magali, Marguerite, Magdalena, Margot... even Madeline?

How about Lucy? It's short and sweet but longstanding enough to have some gravitas.

I have one of the names you've listed that you like and whilst I wouldn't say it's held me back, (and my friend is a well respected GP with the same name!) I would say I do sometimes wish I had a more 'grown up' or sophisticated name. Also I get a TONNE of people telling me that their dog has the same name...

I think the safest way to go is a longer, traditional name that has a sweet nickname.
Your husband likes Beatrice, I think Bea (or Bee) is a cute nickname!

Amelia- Milly
Hester- Hettie, Ettie
Katherine- Katy, Kitty
Charlotte- Charlie, Lottie
Harriet- Hattie

If you want Rosie, I think you still can. Call her Rosemary, Rosalind, Roseanne, Rosamund nn Rosie. I think that's different enough from Rose.

Milly-Molly-Mandy's full name was Millicent Margaret Amanda! And IIRC her mother was Mary, known as Polly.

TTbh I agree with Megan (although I wish she hadn't used the term 'chav' - nobody accused Betty Boothroyd or Mo Mowlem of lacking gravitas.

Maybe try looking at list of girls names ending in Y, that seems to make them “sweet”? Bit simplistic, but might give you some ideas!

I know adult Mollys 1 is in her 20s other in her 40s so it ages fineimo. What about Gracie ?

We’ve just appointed a Professor in an aeronautical engineering discipline with the first name Daisy. I don’t think a cute name is any barrier to a profession. Chav names or awful spellings yes, but cute names no.

@AtticaRose, thanks for you post, I didn't know that about Daisy! And one of the names you listed is my name :)

@PepsiLola - Rosie is the name I always wanted for a daughter since I was a child, DS was going to be Rose if he was a girl, but now have a baby niece called Rose 😭so have had to find another name. It's such a pretty name!

@ChanklyBore, that is exactly what my DH thinks! I babysat such a naughty Maddie that it has coloured the name for me, but I might need to just get over it!
