Me and my hubby are trying for our rainbow baby and I love the name sailor.

Awful name (well it isn’t really a name, it’s a profession) your child won’t thank you for it- but it’s your choice so whatever

If you want to pay tribute to your ancestors, how about using one of their names as the first or middle name for your DC?

It's a wild idea, I know.

Also it's rarely if ever spelled Saylor in the US. It's typically spelled Sailor. Sailor is the name of children of Christie Brinklee, Liv Tyler and Bristol Palin to name a few.

It's becoming increasingly common in the US (American-Canadian here), and we see absolutely nothing wrong with Hunter (it was suggested to me for DS, ignoring the fact my surname is in fact Hunter ) but I think the Brits in general would struggle with it. Basing that on the feel I got while living in the UK.

It's ridiculous as a given name.

I feel the same way about Hunter, Carter, Archer, Mason etc., but somehow Sailor seems even more silly.

I’m in the US.

I actually know a boy called Sailor.

And even here it raises some eyebrows and smiles (though of course not in the presence of the child or parents).

You can call your child anything you like OP. But if you choose something which isn’t ordinarily considered a name in the U.K. you need to be prepared to have explain yourself over and over and over.

As will your child. For the rest of their lives.

NB: Neither of my children have names which are in the top 100.

Midnight has it spot on with this : Sadly you think that tittering about someone's name stops at school, but it doesn't. If we had a Sailor come in to do a presentation or represent a professional organisation then the name would cause judgement & sniggering. It shouldn't be that way but unfortunately it is.

Honestly I started reading this thinking it was awful but after reading it so many times it’s grown on me, it’s not much different to Tailor/Taylor

I don't rate Sailor as a name and my DC don't have common, twee names.

They have sensible names - Roustabout and Debugger.

I kind of like it, makes me think of Sailor and Lula from Wild At Heart.

To be honest there are so many traditional names these days Sailor is really not going to stand out as being that weird.

frum is quite right I am never rude to someone's face about the name they have chosen for their DC, that would be mannerless. It doesn't mean I don't hear some awful names but I would just nod and smile. On this board I am honest, otherwise what is the point?

Well you would, wouldn't you? In RL people wouldn't dream of saying their true thoughts about even a dreadful name. The whole purpose of this board is to be able to give your real opinion.

Occupation names are really just a subsection of transferred surnames. They sometimes work OK on a boy (not to my taste though). But I do not think this one works.
