Me and my hubby are trying for our rainbow baby and I love the name sailor.

Surely an adult changing their name to anything would be seen as slightly unusual?

MsTSwift · 08/11/2018 17:58

My test with these names if you like it so much why doesn’t your dh change his name to Sailor? If he baulks at doing so there’s your answer...

FairyHeet · 07/11/2018 14:40

No no and no again.

It is completely ridiculous

Ihavethistoo · 07/11/2018 11:52

This thread 🤣🤣

Op. Where are you or has this ship sailed?

🚣‍♀️

Ihavethistoo · 07/11/2018 11:50

If your so confident that it's an amazing name wtf would you ask on here.

I'm
Snorting at it because I keep singing 🎤 "what shall we do with the drunken sailor what shall we do with the drunken sailor"

🤣😂🤣😂

Ihavethistoo · 07/11/2018 11:48

Absolutely ridiculous

KateTTC123 · 07/11/2018 10:14

I like it :)

Tropicana1 · 06/11/2018 20:27

God no. Sailor is awful.

If a man approached me and introduced himself as sailor I would honestly think he was taking the piss or trying to be funny.

Bunnyfuller · 06/11/2018 18:21

Frigate
Nelson
Horatio
Fearless
Hermes
Any ship your gramps sailed on
Plymouth/fuzz
Portsmouth/Pompey

Sailor is a bit weak, go all the way!

Harry Roughers
Rum ration
Captain
Chief
Personal fave: seaman (able)

ImDivingIn · 06/11/2018 18:10

If you do this you will setting your child up for a lifetime of ridicule.

Why in the world would you want that?

FartnissEverbeans · 06/11/2018 17:20

I actually like it a lot. I don’t see how it’s anybworse than Taylor, which seems to be considered a pretty normal name now, if not to some people’s taste.

I wouldn’t use it though - other people’s reactions (eg on this thread) would really put me off.

I wouldn’t mind being called Sailor either... It’s definitely more interesting and memorable than my real name!

SilverySurfer · 06/11/2018 11:22

It's bloody awful but I suspect you know that already. I will offer my usual suggestion when people choose stupid names for their babies - if you like it so much change your own name to Sailor and give your child a proper name.

thighofrelief · 05/11/2018 12:49

This confirms for me that i am glad i channelled sensible me rather than wild and romantic me when naming my kids.

SoupDragon · 05/11/2018 12:24

Why are people so unpleasant about someone else's choice of name?

The baby doesn't exist yet.

Going through life with a stupid name is horrible. I can only assume you didn't.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 05/11/2018 12:14

"Why are people so unpleasant about someone else's choice of name? I hope, if any of you were to encounter a child named Sailor, you wouldn't roll your eyes and exchange conspiratorial grins with your snooty mates."

You are aware the OP has posted this in a forum that's based around asking for opinions? If they didn't want them then they shouldn't have posted.

It is an awful name and yes, my friends and I would look at each other with the "they can't be serious face" as it is that ridiculous!

Hoppinggreen · 05/11/2018 10:13

This baby hasn’t even being conceived yet so nobody is being cruel to it by saying they don’t like a possible name
In real life if someone said they were thinking of/had named their baby something I hated or thought wouid set them up for a life of ridicule I would be diplomatic (especially if they had already named it)
However, this is the one place people can get honest feedback on baby names and a flavour of what the poor kid will face for the rest of its life if they DO go with something “unusual”
I’m not saying stick to the same names all the time but people need to understand that they could be opening up a world of “what?” And “how do you spell that” when their friends and family and probably just saying “oh, yes, that’s nice”

OliviaStabler · 05/11/2018 06:58

This is an anonymous forum so people post for real feedback on names. Most people wouldn't bat an eyelid if they met 'Sailor' face to face but they would likely have a good laugh afterwards, not to mention the amount of times that Sailor's CV would be fast tracked to the waste paper basket.

Sometimes parents need a reality check before they embarrass their kid for the rest of their life with a stupid name.

Sandbox · 04/11/2018 20:29

I’ve met a child who looked like a girl with a traditional girls name, decided to play it safe with gender and commented ‘what a lovely name, does it have meaning for you’ to be told they loved the name during pregnancy and wanted it even though they had a boy. I’ve also met children with made up names and ridiculous spellings.
If they had posted on here, maybe they would have reconsidered and the poor kids wouldn’t have a lifetime of explanations ahead.

bridgetreilly · 04/11/2018 20:20

There's a big difference between being polite to someone with an actual name, and giving feedback to someone considering that name. Admittedly, OP doesn't seem to have realised that this forum is generally used for getting feedback on names people are considering, and seems to have just made an announcement. That was not terribly clear at the start.

Sethis · 04/11/2018 14:23

I don't think the OP was interested in taking our feedback on board.

But I do hope she manages to navigate this stormy issue.

It's not all plain sailing when it comes to naming your child, you know.

... I could go on. But I won't. Don't want to sink too much time into the thread.

Hmm
ADastardlyThing · 04/11/2018 14:08

I'd stifle a smirk for sure

MikeUniformMike · 04/11/2018 13:43

How about Mariner or Fisherman.

MarthasGinYard · 04/11/2018 12:19

Oh

I see that ship has sailed

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/11/2018 12:02

OP seems to have flounced grin

Sailed away, even.
