Fantastic idea for a name

My baby years are over, but I've been thinking, after watching history programmes,why don't people use old English names anymore. Ealdwine,Athelstan, Albert ch, Etheldreda all brilliant names, don't you think?

(incidentally it looks like Wulfgifu was the sister of Godiva - I'd never thought about it but I suppose that makes her God's Gift. Riding around on that horse in the altogether.)

I've loved the name Aelfgifu since studying that stuff at university, but it will never, ever be allowed and to be honest that is probably for the best. I've never heard of Wulfgifu before FartnissEverbeans but it is excellent. A gift from the wolves!

But would you use the "modernised" forms (i.e. mediæval) Elfgiva/Alviva instead? Or Ulviva for Wulfgifu? More chance of a revival that way.

Alaric was on our shortlist and we chose another -ric name in the end. Love Old English names!

I love the name Idony (pronounced Id-uh-nee), also Old English if I remember rightly.

Name changed as is FAR too outing!

My middle name is Etheldreda. I've hated it all my life! Having to admit to that on school trips etc... it was awful. If you give your baby one of those names, bear in mind THEY are the one that will have to deal with it later on, not you.

Hereward and Alaric are great names. I'm also a big fan of Godfrey, for that mediaeval knight vibe 😆

I’ve often wondered when these names will make a comeback. Some of them are fantastic names and deserve to be used. My son has a really old name dating back to the 6th century.

I'm pregnant with DC2 and I have actually looked into these kinds of names for if I was to have a daughter. I've looked at other time periods names too.

Not found one I've fallen in love with yet though!

My dh has tried suggesting a load of these old anglo saxon names! He's favourite is Athelstan. I'm not a fan really.
