Mira

The name has so many good meanings, and I love the simplicity of it. I pronounce it as Mee-rah. And yes, I am aware of all the negative and weird associations that some people happen to have with the name (ex. Hindley, the shower company..), but I think as long as the name is not too out there and enough people use it, it'll probably be ok Grin
So do you know any Miras? What do you think of the name itself? I think it's beautiful, but I want to know what other people think of when they hear it ;) Thank you so much!

Oh. It’s pretty, but I think in the uk people will pronounce it with the emphasis on the Me. Like the end of Amelia.

On a side note, I'm curious of your opinions on Melia. It's on my list right now and I think it's quite pretty (it also starts with an M, which is my favorite alphabet letter). The emphasis will be on the "lia" part, so like "Me-Lee-A". Any thoughts?

Wow lots of contradicting comments here. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the honesty. I do agree that when pronounced like Meera the name will be ok, but I will be correcting people a lot if someone calls her Mir-ra. The spelling of Mira itself is a bit confusing I guess :(

I think most people would pronounce Mira as, well, Mira. Not Mee-rah. So you would be constantly correcting people. Don’t think I would pick it.

rainbowquack · 03/11/2018 05:23

One of my best friends is called Amira

Peachbubble · 03/11/2018 05:23

I know a baby Amira. Do you like that? Otherwise, Mira is fine, I'd say.

Narya · 03/11/2018 05:11

I know a Meera - I quite like the name. I think the Meera/Meerah spellings would get fewer mispronunciations and negative connotations.

H1dingInSight · 03/11/2018 04:59

I know two Meera’s, both wonderful. I love the name.

How about Maya (usually pronounced “My-ah”)?

IWouldLikeToKnow · 03/11/2018 04:45

I wouldn't have associated it with Myra Hindley, as it's both pronounced and spelled differently.

TheHobbitMum · 03/11/2018 04:44

As others said never heard it as a name but ive5a lazy, useless Mira in the bathroom

amilosingitor · 03/11/2018 04:40

I don't know if it was how she spelt it but I had a neighbour as a child and it was pronounced like "nearer" but with an M. I've never made any negative connections with it personally. She was Pakistani so I just assumed it was a name from her country as her brother also had what I would call a foreign name.

Linziepie · 03/11/2018 04:37

I know a Mira who is Irish. known her about ten years and I still think of Myra Hindley whenever I hear her name.

DuggeeHugs · 03/11/2018 04:37

I like it and my first thought was the comedian Meera Syal (who I think is excellent), not of Hindley or showers!

smurfy2015 · 03/11/2018 04:29

What about Maria? not much longer but a lovely name or Mariah -

similar and doesnt conjure up visions of serial killers or showers

Mira makes me think of both

Caprisunorange · 03/11/2018 04:21

Yes I know a Mira and she is also Albanian

OliviaStabler · 03/11/2018 04:08

I'd never use Myra as I would always associate with Hindley.

I'd use Mira as I would pronounce Meera like Mira Sorvino

Orangedaisy · 03/11/2018 04:05

I know a Meera. Pronounced M-ear-a. Maybe go with that, no association with showers or hindley then.

jesuispissedoff · 03/11/2018 03:28

It means "look" in Spanish, so that might be interesting if you take them to a Spanish speaking country.

1forAll74 · 03/11/2018 03:21

It would always remind me of the horrible Hindley woman, but I don't think its a pretty name either... but it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks does it ?

tararabumdeay · 03/11/2018 03:17

I met the little girl's mother, she live up the road from me. She was lovely to us but she always talked about her daughter. It's not a name I would use.

AjasLipstick · 03/11/2018 03:11

Yes but it was said "Meera" and not like "My-ra" Spelt "Mira" though.

Unicyclethief · 03/11/2018 03:07

The only Mira I know is Albanian (pronounced meera) and I know 3 Mayras (Hispanic name, but pronounced Myra)

Unicyclethief · 03/11/2018 03:06

Myra is a lovely name. As is Mira.

FastWindow · 03/11/2018 02:53

Sorry babby that must be rotten.

AlrightBabby · 03/11/2018 02:51

Mira, well Myra to be honest was the name of my beautiful Gran, who was lovely and funny and clever and talented and who taught me so much. I always feel very sad that the name is associated with that monster Hindley 😢
