Surname as a middle name?

What are peoples thoughts on using a surname as a middle name? I want to give my baby girl my maiden name as her middle name. My dad passed away last week, this is my first baby and i am devastated that he won't meet her. I really want to honour him in her name but obviously can't use his first name as she is a girl. I only have sisters and we are married now so noone to carry on my wonderful dads name.

Strong tradition in my family over several generations - typically mixed British, and it appears in all parts of the family tree

Very common in Scotland to do this. I did this too as i am the last Slippers and the name would die with me.

I did it with dd.

That sounds lovely.

My nephew has his mums (and my) surname as a middle name, and he loves it.

I absolutely love this idea!
