Surname as a middle name?

mothertobe789 · 02/11/2018 18:40

What are peoples thoughts on using a surname as a middle name? I want to give my baby girl my maiden name as her middle name. My dad passed away last week, this is my first baby and i am devastated that he won't meet her. I really want to honour him in her name but obviously can't use his first name as she is a girl. I only have sisters and we are married now so noone to carry on my wonderful dads name.

A friend of mine her middle name was Kelly. Wasn't til she was older she found out that was her dads last name (didn't know her daf until in her 20s)
Another friend, has two middle names, one is jaimez, which is her mums maiden name!
And another friend put her maiden name as her sons middle name too which is Lee as her surname didn't go well as a double barrel to husbands name

I know a few people who've done this. I don't think it's that unusual - and a lovely thing to do in the circumstances.

stellarfox · 06/11/2018 19:50

Sounds good or can you not make a double-barrelled surname? That's what I am going to do as I don't feel like a middle name is quite enough!

MummyPig21 · 06/11/2018 16:16

My middle name is is my Dad's grandparents surname. I love it.
Guess is depends on what the surname is though.

Sorry for your loss Flowers
Do it.
My DD and her 2 cousins each have my MILs maiden name as their middle names. MIL and her sisters brought up DH and his siblings (father was mostly absent) and MIL had no brothers to carry on their surname. DH and his siblings wanted to acknowledge them for everything they did for the family.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 03/11/2018 01:42

Do it op, lovely idea and great testimony x

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/11/2018 01:39

My son has my surname as his middle name. Now his dad and I have divorced he tends to use that and drop
His dad's name

BackforGood · 03/11/2018 01:28

I'm sorry for your loss.
I understand where you are coming from, but it does cause a lot of issues with large databases (think NHS and Education) when this happens. I've spent ages looking for people to find that someone else entered them under a different letter, etc due to confusion about what is their surname.
tbf, happens when people use surnames like 'Taylor' or 'Harrison' as first names too.

Might not be enough to put you off, but I thought I'd mention it as it can be difficult on massive databases.

My kids have their granddad's last name as a middle name. Gives them a connection to their roots

Shadow1234 · 03/11/2018 01:19

So sorry for your loss 💐. I think your idea is lovely, and a great way to honour your dad (and keep his family name going).

Changeymcchangechange · 02/11/2018 22:25

I did this with my maiden name as a middle name, very common in the north east where my family are from. You just have to be clear it's a middle name not a double barrelled surname on registration etc.

I'm also sorry to hear of your loss x

minniecat2406 · 02/11/2018 22:11

I have this. My mums reasoning (not that she needed one of course) was that anyone tracing family history on the future would find it much easier with the name as a link so my brother and I both do. Currently expecting my first baby and will do the same for them x

stroan · 02/11/2018 22:02

I did this. I also kept my maiden name as my own middle name so I like that we have the same.

It's quite common in Scotland - both my grandmothers had family names as middle names.

PavlovaFaith · 02/11/2018 21:51

Sorry for your loss
My son has my grandfather's surname as his middle name. It's an unusual Prussian word and sounds perfect.

PoohBearsHole · 02/11/2018 21:49

And v good friend has done it to recognise her fathers culture with her dc. She is british/asian married to a brit so it’s lovely to continue the culture for her 🙂

PoohBearsHole · 02/11/2018 21:46

So sorry for your loss

Both mine have my maiden name and another middle name so four names in total 😳. Wanted to do it as the family name from our side won’t be passed on as no boys from my d brother. Both mine now old enough to understand and LOVE it. It is so placed that should they wish to double barrel in future they could but it isn’t there as a general double barrel.

DH was slightly perplexed as i didn’t discuss it prior to registering number one, he didn’t notice with number two.

Both DB and DF have a previous maiden namesake middle names and df was born in the 30s!

mama17 · 02/11/2018 21:36

I've done it with both of mine 😀so my surname is in there and so is their dads

Noboozeforme · 02/11/2018 20:27

My son has my surname as his middle name. It's lovely as I see him as named after my dad.

Sorry about your dad x

lettuceWrap · 02/11/2018 20:20

Face,
I always put my, and the DC middle names in the forename section- can’t put it in the surname bit otherwise people assume it’s a double barrelled surname!

lettuceWrap · 02/11/2018 20:17

Very common here in Scotland. Each of my DC have a surname as a middle name.

RedFin · 02/11/2018 20:14

My DS has his name, df first name, df surname, DH surname. It's a lovely idea

Mummyshark2018 · 02/11/2018 20:11

I have a double barrelled name (post marriage) and gave my dc my maiden name as a second middle name like (not real name) Emily Sophia Brown Barrett . Do it. As my df said to my DH (in a joke)- Emily may not always be Barrett but she'll always be a Brown

Elledouble · 02/11/2018 20:11

I added my maiden name as a second middle name by deed poll! My dad was always disappointed that I didn’t revert to my maiden name after I got divorced and I regretted it too. This way I’ll always have it Smile

It’s a lovely idea OP, do it!

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 02/11/2018 20:06

I have done this with my children, again to preserve a cultural link to my farher’s heritage and to have my name preserved, as well as their father’s. Best wishes, OP.

MsPavlichenko · 02/11/2018 20:00

Scottish here too. I have my mum's and my daughter has mine ( though I kept my own name). She now uses both it and her surname. So sorry about your Dad. I lost mine at 18 , so he didn't get to meet his DGC either.
