Feel like finding a name we both like is impossible

Baby girl due in February

I love names Amelia, Isabella, Sophie, Sophia, Sienna, Aurora (and to shorten to Rory) but feel like they are too popular / there are too many of them

I also like Sienna, Aubrey, Rain, Summer, Priya but DH isn’t keen

DH loves Ruby. He also likes Cerys, Freida. I’m not really keen. Ruby is ok but I don’t love it.

I just feel like I don’t know how we’ll find a name and there are so few he likes. He’s a bit uncompromising about it which doesn’t help.

How do we find and agree on a name we both like? Will it be easier when she’s here??

But if you love the names and don't know anyone with that name then just use it!
Seriously, nobody's life is blighted by having a name that someone else has!

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 26/10/2018 22:03

DH doesn’t like a boy name for a girl

Best not shorten her name to Rory so...

SoyDora · 26/10/2018 22:00

I know loads of siennas, there are 5 that I know of in DD’s small primary school. And loads of Sophies/Sophias/Amelias. Only know one Aurora though.

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 21:56

Alicia and Cassia are lovely

That’s interesting about Aurora. It seems quite “now”. DH has heard of two or three people naming their babies Aurora in the last few months and people seem to post about it a lot on mumsnet.

But I’ve never met an Aurora or a Sienna! I know one Sophie and have never met an Amelia or Isabella but think they are popular baby names now

I work in a two forms entry primary school.
Have worked in primary 10 years.

I have NEVER met an aurora or a sienna.

There are maybe two amelias in the whole school.

My two sons have incredibly common names but it genuinely has never caused any issues.

NameChange30 · 26/10/2018 21:22

I disagree. It should be a joint decision.

But then again I would like everyone to keep their own names after marriage and children to get one surname from each parent.

In my egalitarian utopia Grin

IdblowJonSnow · 26/10/2018 21:19

If the baby is having his surname, surely you should get the casting vote on the first name? If, after carrying a child for 9 months and then giving birth, you can't agree together, then it's got to be the woman's choice, surely!

Polkasq · 26/10/2018 21:18

I have never met an Aurora or Sienna.

“DH doesn’t like a boy name for a girl even if it’s his”
Well I agree with him on that. If you had a boy, would you give him your first name as a middle name? I doubt it.

I don’t know where Aurora is ranked but I very much doubt there will be 5 in any class!

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 21:16

@NameChange30 I actually would give his name as a middle name although I know that’s unusual his first name is James and my first choice was Aurora James... DH doesn’t like a boy name for a girl even if it’s his! She would have his (our) surname too.

@crunchtime I don’t want a really unusual name that makes people go “what?” but I just don’t like the idea of her being one of five Auroros or Amelias in her class...

Cross post!

crunchtime · 26/10/2018 21:10

I think you should all stop worrying about how popular a name is.
All that matters is whether or not you like a name.
Having an unusual name is vastly over rated. I say this as someone with an unusual name who could never get pencils with their names on!
Your child is special and unique because of their personality and who they are.. not because of their name.

NameChange30 · 26/10/2018 21:09

If you both like Madeleine why not use that? It’s a lovely name.

Otherwise you could both write a list of a agreed number of names (say 10 each) then the other person could veto a limited number (say up to 6 each) and then see if there are any left over that you both like. Each of you might find that certain names grow on you and you go off others. Or when your DD is born one name will feel right.

You will find a name you both like. Just don’t let him bully you into using a name you don’t like. She’s your daughter too and you’ll be giving birth.

Oh and FWIW if you’re giving the baby his surname then why not consider a middle name from your side of the family?

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 21:08

Madeleine makes me think of Madeleine McCann too 😕

Each making a list is a good idea. Might make DH broaden his horizons?

LethalWhite · 26/10/2018 21:06

Sienn is much more of a stripper name than Ruby for example

LethalWhite · 26/10/2018 21:05

Astrid?

Ruby is lovely, not stripper name (see bake off!)

Frieda is cool, like the Frieda Kahlo link

Maybe both write a top 10 of girls names and see if any match?

hrd2018 · 26/10/2018 21:03

DH and I sat with the complete spreadsheet of names used in 2016 (thousands!) and deleted all the names we didn't want. We had three matches on our list! We used one for first name and one for middle name.

Lipsticktraces · 26/10/2018 21:00

And Joules is a clothing company!

Lipsticktraces · 26/10/2018 21:00

Camille is a beautiful name, as Is Madeline. Unfortunately it now makes me think of Madeleine Mcann.

Jules is a nickname.

Annandale · 26/10/2018 20:57

Madeleine is glorious. Madeleine Frieda?

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:54

*Clarissa

OP posts:
AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:54

We both quite like Isla but again think it’s a bit too popular?

I think Camille and Ingrid perhaps but not in love with them

DH likes Clariss

We both like Madeleine

I kind of like Jules / Joules

TatianaLarina · 26/10/2018 20:52

I’m with you on Freida I’ve never liked it.

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:51

@AutoFillUsername You never know it might grow on me! I have already changed my name from time to time about different names.
