Sorry if I offend anyone but I just don't get it.

I've just seen these name spellings on Facebook....

Edythe and Alyvia. I'm assuming pronounced Edith and Olivia. Whhyyyy

In the 'alternative' version of Twilight the author switches the sexes and Edward becomes Edythe. It's even worse than the original.

Edythe is quite a long-established variant of Edith, quite popular in the 19th century, and is probably just as close as more modern Edith to the Anglo-Saxon origin of the name: Eadgyð (the final letter was pronounced 'th').

Yes, the spellings are awful and unnecessary. 'Chav' is not the connection that I would make. I know plenty of middle class parents who create 'new spellings' of traditional names.
