"unique" spellings *cringe*

Sorry if I offend anyone but I just don't get it.

I've just seen these name spellings on Facebook....

Edythe and Alyvia. I'm assuming pronounced Edith and Olivia. Whhyyyy

Please read the whole thread. You risk looking ill-informed otherwise.

As I and at last one other poster have said, Edythe is not a 'fresh hell'. It's been used since the 19th century - the time when Anglo-Saxon names, including the original - Eadgyð - became newly fashionable.
Edythe is at least as accurate a modernised version of the original name as Edith.

I worked with a Niel pronounced Neil. Spends his lifetime saying no it's ie not ei and not receiving his emails...

I have to confess to quite liking unique spellings on the provision that you can you're not looking think WTF is that. I mean what they fresh hell I'd Edythe. egMy dd is Molly I wish I'd have been a bit more adventurous now and gone wit h some thing like Molli Molleigh. I know of a Keli once which I thought was lovely.
If someone hadnt have pointed out that it WS Edith. I'd have been saying Eddy-the.Grin

BlaaBlaaBlaa no that’s not true. It’s a common racist myth but there’s no evidence of it. There’s also no evidence for anyone called La-a (Ladasha) another one wheeled out to be offencive to African Americans.

Not quite the same but at school last week a mum called out loudly to her son "Ex-hay-vi-aaaah, come here"

He has the same name as my dad - Xavier. Creole Caribbean sounds like 'Zavier'. DDs dad is Brazilian/Portuguese & they have variation of name but pronounced 'Javier' (very soft J').

I did feel like bit of a name snob tho. But I couldn't help it...just, No.

So I guess at times it's also pronunciation that parents don't know

I have young women come to work with me sometimes and I wonder if they're parents just didn't know the spellings

This season I've met a Jaid, kileigh and a Young man 'Lewk'

All British and wearing the name badges

Which of course I questioned
