Connor or Cillian??

Hello!!

So I have found out we are having a baby boy and I love both of the names, and I really can't decide which to go for?
So do you prefer Cillian or Connor, a bit of public feedback always helps me before deciding on a name!

@theveryhungrydieter yes, it's another language, but that knowledge doesn't take away from the fact that for those who don't speak Irish, the name may have negative connotations. For example, I know someone with a name that's pronounced Shyster. Which, to me, is a not-very-nice slang term for someone unscrupulous. In their language, it means rose. Do I particularly like the name? No. But that's because it makes me think of the slang term. I also don't like the name Zoe because it makes me think of a school bully I knew. I don't think PP was being culturally insensitive, just supplying her own feelings about the name, which is what the OP asked for.

Cillian is not my cup of tea and it'll get trendy and naff. My BFF is called Conor though so I might be biased.

"Cillian has 'kill' in it" must read as the most culturally insensitive thing I've read today. Top marks..

Actually in the Irish language the sound or prefix "kill" means "church", which is about as apposite as you can get from murder.

I keep reading 'Gillian' as I know a few of those and haven't yet met a 'Cillian'.
So, from your two, I prefer Conor

Yes but it’s another language so has a different meaning. It doesn’t mean kill.

I know a Cillian (well, I know his parents and have met him). I'm glad to have my mental spelling corrected as I did think it was a K Blush but I do like the name.
Parents are, indeed, Irish.

I have a Conor although Cillian was one of my top five names when I was pregnant (husband is a born and bred Irishman but we live in England)

Silly-en would sound quite wrong.

Agree about the spelling though- Connor is the surname, Conor the first name.

Conor. We considered it but oldest DC has 4 in their nursery class which ruled it out for us (not in Ireland)

Cillian. It’s less widely used than Conor in my neck of the woods though well known enough that it’s nevrt mispronounced or misspelt.

Cillian is much nicer than Conor. But if you're going to use Conor, spell it that way.
