Rufus, Hector or Benedict

My son will be born in February and my surname begins with an R. I like Rufus, Hector and Benedict for different reasons. What do you think?

Rufus. I have one and I’ve had so many compliments. Don’t be put off by the dog’s name connotations. I was worried about that too, but it’s actually a cool, strong name and there are a few more around these days. Felix is a great name but it’s also a popular cat’s name. I don’t think people think of that though when they meet a little boy Felix.

To be pedantic it’s not the meaning of the actual word but a pejorative sense that evolved in the 18c. A bit like the negative use of gay.

Hector was a wonderful hero though despite the tragic end and the meaning of the verb.

I like Rufus but it was vetoed by dh on the grounds of "dog name." I still think it's a great name, which is good going 20 years later.

Benedict, the Rufus.

I don't like Hector because of the meaning of the verb 'to hector' - bully, browbeat, intimidate etc. There are much nicer names from Greek mythology.

There was a Benedict at my school and he was nicknamed ‘bent-dick’ so I associate that with the name sadly. Really like Rufus - especially with an R surname :)

Rufus by a mile, I love it and I have one. Gets shortened to Roo too which is pretty cool

Hector or Rufus. Benedict will become Ben, and Ben is the most boring name in the world apart from Joseph.

Hector or Benedict. I slightly prefer Benedict but they’re both great. Rufus sounds like a dog’s name and I don’t like it for a human.
