A friend of mine is due in a few weeks with a girl - she's set on the name Panda. I questioned it at first, & she is insistent that it is no different to the increasingly used names Bear, Fox, Wolf etc, etc... I have got used to it and it is slightly growing on me but still can't shake the thought that she's going to get hurt at bad reactions!! Does anyone on here having anything positive to say about it? 😂

(I have suggested Pandora nn Panda but she's not sold at all) Hmm

My sister was nearly named Panda. Think she's quite relieved it was DF's turn to choose the name as she has a very normal traditional name instead!

I think it's great. She could have a sibling called Bear or Koala or Roo or something.

Bear and Fox etc. are pretty stupid too, quite honestly.

Even as a nickname I think it's horrible. Also pandas are cute but they're huge, slovenly, greedy and pretty stupid - not exactly an animal I'd like to be named after! Haha. (Saying that I'd not like to be named after any animal. I think this new animal naming this is awful!)

We almost went with Pandora because I loved the nn Panda but didn't in the end. Wasn't brave enough! My DD really wouldn't have suited it anyway.

I know an Amanda who's called Panda by everyone. Including at work where she's a senior accountant.

I have a friend called Amanda who is sometimes known as Panda as a nn- with her full approval, she also likes Pandas, getting Panda themed gifts etc. But Amanda is a lovely, classy name where as I can't quite see Panda as a fully grown woman. Does the child's father have an opinion in this? Perhaps if she at least has a normal middle name she'll have the option of using that.

Shock is she definitely serious? Not pulling your leg? That is awful. (I’m one of those boring people that also thinks Bear, Fox and Wolf are bloody silly things to call a child).

I knew an Amanda who was called “Manda-Panda” (by her mum and dad) or sometimes just “Panda” (by her dad - not by anyone else ever), and she was pissed off enough about that. Panda as an actual name is appalling. Does anyone think there’s a chance the registrar might refuse to register it?

OMG No! It might be cute on a baby but imagine the person as an adult, it doesn't work at all.
The bear/Fox/wolf names that are popular now are celebrity kids, they won't have to worry about being taken seriously in a professional job.

No. Panda is awful, as are Bear fox and wolf. Nicknames maybe, not official names. That's just embarrassing. Cringe at the thought of introducing yourself at interviews or writing the name Panda on any legal documents 😳

I have a relative who’s Pandora nn Panda and it’s lovely, but as a stand alone name it’s pretty. You can’t do much about your friend’s choices though unfortunately.

Just because some animals are used as names doesn't mean all can be. Ask her if she things it would be ok to call a child Dog or Rat or Horse.
