Ida?

Hi all,
What are people's thoughts on the name Ida for a girl? It's our first baby, due in 6 weeks. DH absolutely loves the name but I'm yet to be convinced! I'm a bit worried it's going to become really popular...?

I think it's great and it's vintage in way that is cool rather than musty. I also think it's the sort of name that will be much more beautiful on a person rather than as an idea - do you know what I mean? Hearing the name "Ida" I think it's sweet but am not overwhelmed but if I met a little girl called Ida I think I'd really love it and think it was really cool! Do you know what I mean? Often little personalities can bring out the best in a name!

I'm an Ida (pronounced Eye-da) and love my name! I think it is pretty without being fussy, it's simple (just 3 letters! ) and unusual without being weird. I'm in my 40s and have only ever met 1 other Ida in my life. For the last 10 to 15 years people have been telling me that Ida will become popular again but whenever I check it's never reached the top 100. I think its still very rare and I like that. It makes me feel unique 😊. I've never had anyone call me Ada or Ee-da. Despite how rare it is everyone seems to know how to spell it.

Ooh my dh and I have similar taste to you! Ida was our second choice with dd2 but when testing it out decided it sounded a bit like ‘I-had-a’ when said quickly! dd1 is also a name ending with ‘a’ so we chose an ‘ie’ ending name. Also really love Clara and it’s my joint favourite with Clover if we ever have another. (Dh hates Clover as it sounds like a weed apparently).
I think you’re right, it could become really popular as it’s from that generation that is now on trend. But if you like it I’d go for it anyway. I think it’s a mistake to choose a name thinking it won’t be popular as you just don’t what the next famous singer etc is going to be called. Just go with what name you like the sound of enough to be saying/cooing/shouting a hundred times a day!

Nina is nicer than Ida imo. Also always pronounced the same, whereas Ida can be Eeda and Eyeda

Thanks guys, it's so tough isn't it?!! I'd pronounce Ida 'Eye-da'.
Still going round the houses on Ida Vs Clara Vs Nina!!!

Traditionally in Britain they are pronounced

Ida - eye-da (in continental Europe I think it's ee-da)
Ada- ay-da ( " " " " " " ah-da)

So Ida and Ada are never supposed to have the same pronunciation.

Where are you OP? I'm in the North West but have lived all over and Ida (as above had a Great Aunty Ida) it was Eye-da. I've never ever heard Ida pronounced Eeda as some posters have suggested. I think it was quite a common name for my grandparents generation (I'm in my forties so I mean people born in say 1910 / 20s) and certainly in the North it's Eye-da.

Maybe try to establish what the usual pronounciation is locally before you decide.

I really like Ida! I suggested it to DH before I had our daughter two months ago but he immediately said no! Then when X Factor started he goes ‘Ayda, that’s a nice name’ Angry. I’d pronounce them both the same.

I quite like Ida (pr Eye-da) as for me it's associated with the James Baldwin book, Another Country, but think Nina is prettier. Ada and Edna I dislike.

I can't get behind Ida (Eye-da) sorry! All it makes me think of is Ida Buttrose, who don't get me wrong an amazing woman in her own right, but she is 76...

Ida is pretty and a bit different. There is a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera called 'Princess Ida'.

Ada is OK and seems to be fashionable again now, though always seems old-ladyish to me, probably because I knew old ladies with the name, back in the 70s.

But Edna is hideous. Maybe because I think of Dame Edna Everage?

No no no!
Not Ida or Ada or Edna or any other name that sounds like a geriatric woman on Coronation Street.
There are so many beautiful girls' names, please choose one of them and not Ida etc.
