Hello all,
I'm having a boy in November, and husband and I are at a loss as to what to call him. He wants Richard, I want Stephen. Which one do you all prefer? Thanks so much!

Two syllable names like Stephen and Richard do not need to be shortened at all! They're lovely as they are.

Richard and Stephen are both very 80's, are you sure??? Richard could be Dick or Dicky, Stephen will likely be Steve. Probably best to decide based on the nicknames.

They pair nicely together. It sounds better to my ear if Richard is the first name. Richard Stephen. Looks pretty nice too. 😎👍

I like both. How about a name with a similar classic style like Philip, Michael, Martin, Alan, Mark, Peter etc?

@Sunflower321 Rich is a really common nickname for Richard. Most Richards I've met get called Rich

What's wrong with calling him Richard?

Rich sounds strange as a name, like poor.

I understand your point.. But I bet a lot of the kids have a Dad or Uncle called Richard or Stephen... Or both. Exotic is a push!

Both aren't my taste and are very dated imo. Is there anything you like? If not I'd say Stephen at a push.

I like Stephen best, not keen on Steve but the i know an adult Stephen who always goes by Stephen so I think its possible. Ste is also quite nice

I don't know any little Stephen's or Richards but I do know a newborn Richie. Can't say I'm a fan

Both are nice and will probably sound exotic in a class full of Arlos and Leo's.
I don't like Ricky/Rich/Ritchie so I've probably choose Stephen (Stevie is quite sweet), though there might be more creative nickname alternatives.

Both Richard and Stephen make a refreshing change to all the Archies, Alfies, Noahs etc Great strong names!

I like Stephen of the two, although I do know a 7 year old Richard, which sounds so unusual (and nice) to hear when all his peers are Archie, Noah, Mason etc
