Amy (on it's own) + separate MN

Hi all,

What do you think of Amy (thanks to those that suggested this name to me)?
How does it sound?

I'd like Esther as second name but not with a hyphen, just as stand alone second name

In fact growing up in the 90s I'm pretty sure basically everyone in my class was called Amy or Laura. They're both dated but not in a good way, just in a way that they seem a little dull and way too familiar. Whereas Esther is beautiful, classic, elegant and timeless. In my opinion!

Keep the Esther but make Amy the second name. Esther is gorgeous, Amy is fine but a little dull, Amy Laura quite 90s I think

I think Amy sounds good with another 'A' name as a middle name.

You mention being a multicultural family. Do you mind me asking what the mix is? I only ask because it might help us to think of some other names.

@ellynewmum the other name I've always loved is Holly. Neither are massively creative but I think both are very pretty, normal names :)

Evangeline Esther? Esther seems hard to incorporate as a middle name. Amy doesn’t seem to have many middle names that suit it judging by the above 🤷🏼‍♀️ Laura definitely doesn’t ‘go’. My name is Amy and I feel it’s the most boring name out tbh. Call her Esther, it’s beautiful!

names.darkgreener.com/#esther if you look at the chart, Ester is definitely on the rise. It was 141 last year so still not hugely popular but I really wouldn't be surprised if it breaks the top 100 this year. I know 3 born this year!

Amy Laura sounds VERY 1980's! Amy Esther goes better imo, and in any case you'll so rarely say the names together that it really doesn't matter!

Esther is not overly popular but is used occasionally in every generation. It's nice. Amy is ok but gets shortened to Ames.
Esther doesn't get mentioned because it's not super trendy. I know 2 Esthers IRL and have always liked the name.

A name that appears a lot on favourite names is far more likely to date badly.

@Daisypond - I like Esther a lot too, but got a bit put off by the general feeling of old/very vintage that it has in the UK.
Although we are a multicultural family, she'll be born and raised here..

Also, when you see people lists or names suggestions, it hardly gets mentioned..

I know it's not a popularity context but I'm a bit wary of how the name is perceived here by the general public..

I much prefer Esther to Amy, which is a name I find very bland. Esther is strong name and it doesn't end in an ee sound. Esther Amy would be fine.

A bit of popularity doesn't bother me - but I'd prefer not to pick a top of the chart name to avoid having other 2-3 girls in the class with the same.

I like names with a meaning and a positive message for a girl
ie. Esther speaks of courage and resolution
Amy means loved, I see it as a message of love

I'm looking for something classical, but that doesn't sound dated or old

If you've any suggestions please fire away

I don’t think of Esther as being old fashioned in the old lady/granny sense. Those names, to me at least, are Ivy, Elsie, Mabel etc. I think of Esther as being a more classic, biblical name. I really like it, though obviously my opinion doesn’t count. What kind of names do you like in general? Granny names, biblical, English Rose, hipster etc.?
You mentioned Amy and Laura. There are a lot of Amys about, and it’s been popular for a long time. Some people are put off by popularity of names, does this bother you? Of the two, I prefer Laura as I think it’s less common than Amy.

Love the name Amy, it's one of two names we're considering for our dd who is due in 2 weeks. It's trailing off the popularity lists too which suits me down to the ground as I don't want her to be one of 5 with the same name in her class and yet its still a nice normal name.

Amy Esther would be fine, so would Amy Laura. But I'd agree with pps that Emma Esther doesn't flow well.
