There have been a couple of threads about this name in the last 6 months or so, so you aren't the only ones who think it's a nice name! I quite like it. I would not choose it myself but I think it's a bit like Indigo or Phoenix - it would really suit a certain type of child.

When I was about ten or eleven i loved the name Esmeralda because it seemed sort of emerald-ish.Blush

I think it's a pretty sounding word and I like the idea of it, but I wouldn't want to be called it so it's a no. It does sound a bit strippery and is a bit of a mouthful.

I know a little girl named Amethyst, lovely little one, sometimes goes by Amey. I think it's a nice name though my favourite gem name is Olivine.

Some real prejudice against sex work and stripping on this thread. What's so wrong about being a stripper?

Also strippers usually choose their own stage names for dancing so the fact that there are strippers called something is indicative of it being a name a woman would choose for herself

Love it. Love jewel names. Don't associate them with strippers, more with an older generation. (Stripper name to me is more things like Randi, Kayleigh, Britney ,Chyna and Kardashian type names).

I think it’s a very pretty word and I like the ‘thyst’.

Find Amethyst a bit of a mouthful and no shortenings come ‘naturally’ to me.

I hate it when people say a name is a ‘stripper name’, but I actually did once know a stripper called Amethyst!

I don’t think that’s any reason not to use it if you love it, though. It’s not to my taste, but I’m not the one naming your baby!

Thanks everyone Smile what would your go-to nickname be of the name? Would it be Amy? I liked Ammie/Ama more but just wondering if your first thought to nickname would be Amy as that one didn't cross my mind?

I think its lovely and it was high up on our list for a girl.
Its a good one too because it can easily be shortened to Amy if she ever feels its a bit too out there for her!

I dont get all this 'stripper' stuff!! Everyone on here seems to hate precious stone names.... I really doubt youd actually ever encounter a stripper named Amethyst, Garnet, Emerald, Topaz, Beryl or Opal!! These names have been in usage for hundreds of years....
I used to work in an old peoples home where a perfectly run of the mill old lady called Emerald was.... she had certainly never been a stripper!!

I think they are coming back in to fashion now just like names from the turn of the century and Victorian times such as Cora and Edith etc
So they will not be unusual on the playground and certainly not associated with strippers!
