While I get the whole tradition of sons taking mothers maiden name as a first name normally the Mc/Mac was dropped.

McGregor became Gregor
McDonald became Donald
Richardson became Richard
Ferguson became Fergus
Other names Stewart, Graham, Mitchell, Fraser kept the exact form
McLean never heard of a Lean and no I would never consider it.

For the poster who thought there was a difference between Mc/Mac they are both son of. Gaelic also has Nic which is daughter off but I've never seen it used outwith Gealic circles / BBC Alba. And I believe most girls are given Mc/Mac on their birth certificates even within the Gealic speaking communities.

powerless I am with Francis I have no real objection to Americans calling their dds Mackenzie or McKenzie but it is a fact that originally the name was Mac (son of) Kenzie. Mac means 'son of' in the original language of the name and it is a simple lack of education to suggest otherwise.

@mrsfoxplus4 thanks! My ds is called Harris, which is also a surname too, so it would keen with the trend! I do like it! Mclean Angus ....? :)

I like it my first sons called Layton John after my papa everyone loves to remind me it’s a surname. We can’t all be called Olivia & Noah.

Just to add, my MIL didn't like out girls name either .. we still used it cos it was my favorite 😉 it's not her baby , if you love Angus you should use it !

I don’t know what spelling I have given but it’s Lachlan not Laughlan. Perhaps stick with Malcolm.

That's not a valid argument,Happy.
Plenty of first names are surnames even your run of the mill names such as Paul Kelly Clare Lee Francis Stewart are all surnames. Plus Riley Harrison Jackson are all surnames I'm tripping over them.

Not a fan of "Mac" names as first names either.

Calmac isn't a name... Caledonian McBrayne.

Fergus, Brodie, Blair, Alistair, Gregor, Callan, Cameron or go more off piste with something like Hamish or Torquil.
