How would you pronounce this name....

Alicia?

A - liss - e - a
Or
A - lee - sha

I love the first pronunciation but hate the second. Is there another way some might spell it so it’s more obviously pronounced the first way?

I agree it's a class thing:

Middle class/private school/white - A-liss-ee-a

Working class/More diverse/comprehensive - Aleesha

Sounds like there are several common pronunciations, which could be really annoying in the long by run.

I met a Marcia at university in the 1980s. I thought it was pronounced Mar see ah but she was from the USA and was Marsha.

The Alicia I know is pronounced Al iss ee ah. Al ee sha is the more common US pronunciation which younger people seem to use.

Patrissia? Seriously? I've heard Patreesha here in Ireland but I thought that was down to accent.

According to someone who works in a big comprehensive it’s a class thing( round here at least).

So middle class kids
Alissia
Working class
Alisha

Though obvs there are exceptions.

The name Alicia used to be pronounced Al-is-ear. Like the ballerina Alicia Markova.
It dropped out of fashion about 50 years ago then Alicia Keys became popular about 20 years ago and she pronounced her name Aleesha. So everyone thought that's how you pronounce Alicia.
I like the old pronunciation, much prettier.

I prefer Alissia but have heard equal numbers of Aleeshas and also one Aleethea

My cousins name is Alysia, pronounced the first way.

If I say the name OP suggested I would pronounce it second way.

It's A-lee-sha. I don't know why this is even up for debate. Words in the English language that have cia in them = sha.

Social, appreciate, pediatrician, alopecia, artificial, beautician, clinician, financial, special...

Was at school with a girl with this name written Alicia and pronounced Aleesha so I would generally pronounce it like that

That's precisely why Alicia never made it on my shortlist, I love the first pronunciation but was worried everyone would say it 'the wrong' way. How about Alice instead?

It's tough because English has more than one way to pronounce many words/names.

In many other languages both Patricia and Alicia are pronounced Pat ree zia and Al ee zia.

But in English it's often Patrisha and Alisha.
