What does everyone think of Avery for a boy? And any other suggestions welcome! I
also really like Ellis but DH isn't keen. Thank you!

Avery is OK but prefer Ellis. I consider them boys' names but know girls of each.

Elliott is less contentious?

I know both are boy’s names, but then so us Hilary, Leslie, Ashley, Lindsay, Taylor etc. I wouldn’t use either because they are turning feminine.

Sungura · 06/10/2018 04:54

If it truly works as a unisex name, I like it, but I find that unisex names skew female, I have a girl cousin named Avery. Once a name is taken by girls, they seldom are shared with boys. For this reason, I'd probably not use the name. ☹️

dragonsteeth · 05/10/2018 18:15

I knew someone who was a bit of a character with the surname Avery. His nickname was unsavoury. So personally I wouldn't think it was avery good idea as a first name

Riv · 05/10/2018 10:55

Avery make very good print labels 😊(misses point)

Notmissmoneypenny · 05/10/2018 08:12

I love it.
I know people are using it for girls Hmm but it’s a boys name and a diminutive of Alfred!

KarineAimee · 05/10/2018 08:11

Love it! Smile

squirrelnutkins1 · 05/10/2018 00:31

Makes me think of Greys anatomy! Like both names. I like Avery best x

manicinsomniac · 05/10/2018 00:04

I love it for a girl.

Not convinced for a boy.

Normandy144 · 04/10/2018 22:38

Love the name Avery, but although I know it was originally a boys name, I much prefer it for a girl.

wizzywig · 04/10/2018 22:35

Isnt avery a weighing scales and/or name tag brand

Knitwit101 · 04/10/2018 22:33

The only Avery I know is the man in Nashville.
I know a boy and a girl called Ellis, both in the same year at our school but luckily not the same class!

SequinsOnEverything · 04/10/2018 22:28

I have only heard it as a boys name a d I really like it, partially because I like a very on Nashville.

I would never have made the association with Harry Potter and I've read the books a few times and seen all the films.

Zazia · 04/10/2018 22:26

Also reminds me of the show Nashville. Love it!

Freetodowhatiwant · 04/10/2018 20:43

I’m obsessed with Nashville at the moment (tv show - brilliant - if you need a recommendation) and there is a male Avery on that. I think it’s a pretty name but it is a bit ‘aviary’.

greyspottedgoose · 04/10/2018 20:40

I like it a lot, along with Eden, Archer and Ellis

Shruggy · 04/10/2018 20:33

I love it. DH said no as it reminded him of the (male) character from the TV show Nashville, which is how I had heard of it. Use it!

BlueJava · 04/10/2018 19:39

Sorry, I don't like Avery. It reminds me of weighing scales!

Sunshine91 · 04/10/2018 19:34

Thanks for the replies so far everyone!! According to google, Avery was commonly used for a boy originally and more recently used for a girl. So I think it can be for either

Teri Hatcher's dd is called Emerson.

DramaAlpaca · 04/10/2018 19:29

I dislike it as it makes me think of envelopes & aviaries.

It's a girls' name though, isn't it?

AuntieStella · 04/10/2018 19:26

It's a boys name, and a Death Eater, so I wouid probably rule it out on those grounds. I don't see Harry Potter fading for some time to come.

I think Ellis is a lovely name; others you might like to think about - Emerson, Elliott, Eden, Alexander, Otto, Alastair, Edward,?

Shadow1234 · 04/10/2018 19:25

I really like the name Avery, but I prefer it for a girl tbh.

Really like Ellis as well (I know of two, ones a boy, ones a girl).

What about Elliot as an alternative if OH isnt keen on Ellis.

iggel · 04/10/2018 19:20

I didn't expect to but I actually like it! Ellis is nice too.
