I really like both these names for girls-
Opinions on both? Which one sounds better?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 26/09/2018 14:41

I like Opal, in a hillbilly kind of way.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 26/09/2018 14:34

What about Spangle?? They were delicious too!!

NonaGrey · 26/09/2018 14:12

Sorry, I think they are both dreadful.

Of all the beautiful names out there...

JacintaJones · 26/09/2018 14:10

Comparing Opal with Onyx is akin to choosing between Coral and Crystal.

I love Coral btw. Have you considered it?

Proofer · 26/09/2018 14:06

Opal, Onyx is awful

SumAndSubstance · 26/09/2018 14:06

AprilShower, is that true!? A blast from the past Grin

madeoficecream · 26/09/2018 11:31

Think they are both gorgeous but Onyx would win it for me!

strawberrypenguin · 26/09/2018 11:27

Isn't Onyx a Pokemon?

Opal is by far the nicer of the two

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 26/09/2018 11:13

I read an article that Starburst are changing back to Opal Fruits. ..
Just so you know!

mycheapshoes · 26/09/2018 11:12

Not keen on either but Opal if it has to be one one then.
How about Pearl?
Or Ocean, Orla or Oona if you like O names

GinIsIn · 26/09/2018 11:08

I think they both sound like types of Vauxhall car - sorry!

PassportBridgetPants · 26/09/2018 08:24

I think my tastes differ from most on here - I love both and it's nice to hear something a bit different. Opal is 'prettier' but it depends if that matters to you.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/09/2018 01:36

They are both really horrible names. If you’re really dead set on a stone, what’s wrong with Ruby?

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 26/09/2018 01:20

Definitely Opal.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 01:16

There is of course a female character called Oryx in Atwood's Oryx and Crake.

newroundhere · 26/09/2018 01:09

Oryx and Onyx - good twin names??

Wink
LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 01:06

Here is a painting of an oryx with onyx.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 01:01

Isnt an onyx a type of antelope?

It's an oryx - but the fact you thought of it is another reason to avoid it. I wonder if one could buy an oryx made of onyx?

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 00:58

It's an old-fashioned, feminine name that'll grow with your child

Is it a name? I've come across all of Pearl, Ruby, Beryl, Coral, Crystal, Amber, Jade, Jasper but not an Opal.

Blameanamechange · 26/09/2018 00:57

Isnt an onyx a type of antelope? And Opal sounds like someones granny or those sweets that used to be called opal fruits! (now called starburst)

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 00:52

Neither. But if you absolutely must (and I can't think why given there a gazillion alternatives) Opal. Onyx is terrible.

newroundhere · 26/09/2018 00:49

I prefer Opal BUT it's traditionally thought of as being an unlucky stone so that might put me off.

ColinsVeryJolly · 26/09/2018 00:46

Onyx sounds like a dodgy market stall aftershave

Opal feels like it should be nice but there’s something weird about it that just makes it wrong for a name.

LydiaLunch7 · 26/09/2018 00:23

Onyx is definitely a pokemon Grin

UnconsideredTrifles · 26/09/2018 00:15

It may not matter much in your child's generation, but the immediate association for me is the Pokemon onyx, which is a giant snake made of boulders...
