A new child at dgd’s School is called Tallis. I have never heard it before. What do you think?

Talisman...

Nah.

FartnissEverbeans · 28/09/2018 08:53

I actually love it. It makes me think of Atonement though.

BlowPoke · 28/09/2018 07:08

Is the older brother named Shofar?

Any Jewish person (including me) would find the name Tallis super weird, bordering on bizarre. It’s fhe word for a particular shawl thing that is for many people quite central to the practice of Judaism. It’s also called tallit but tallis is just as common.

Stringofpearls · 28/09/2018 06:59

Not the worst I've heard but im not too keen, reminds me of the European train company Thalys.

Bezalelle · 28/09/2018 06:56

It's a Jewish prayer shawl to me!

AlliKaneErikson · 26/09/2018 23:07

Thanks for the reminder jitters - I meant Fantasia; Variations is the version for Brass Band (possibly my favourite piece ever to play on euphonium).

Screenburn · 26/09/2018 22:44

All I hear is the French train service - spelled ‘Thalys’

Jitters22 · 26/09/2018 14:56

Ah the wondrous Thomas Tallis - his music is just so evocative of the Tudor era in which he lived. Whenever I listen to it I am transported back to the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

Then there is the great homage to Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Never heard Tallis used as a Christian name before, but I rather like it. I wonder if her parents are fans.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 26/09/2018 14:50

Balonz! It never ever gets old

Ethelswith · 26/09/2018 14:13

I assumed it was transferred surname name - my DBro follows the Tallis Scholars avidly

I think it works ok as a first name

SumAndSubstance · 26/09/2018 14:01

Her older brother has an even more unusual name often mentioned here

Even more unusual than Tallis, which I have never heard as a given name in my life? But mentioned often on Mumsnet…. Is he called Balonz?!

ElectricCandlelight · 26/09/2018 13:09

Phallus. Seriously I must be juvenile because that's what appeared in my mind...

But I like Tallis.

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 26/09/2018 13:07

I like it!

StableGenius · 26/09/2018 13:05

I like it (because I like Thomas Tallis) and it's a bit like the Welsh boy's name Taliesin, which I also like.

Like.

thegreylady · 26/09/2018 13:03

It is a little girl. Her older brother has an even more unusual name often mentioned here but it could be outing to give it.

It’s what DH wanted to call DD! It’s onenof our favourite pieces of music (Variations on a theme of Thomas Tallis). I really like the but wasn’t brave enough!

bridgetreilly · 25/09/2018 18:37

Surname, not first name, imo.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2018 16:45

Unusual but good.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 25/09/2018 16:41

Is the mother (or father) musical??

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 25/09/2018 16:40

unusual...

SleepingStandingUp · 25/09/2018 16:37

I actually literally like it. I read it and thought ugh but then I heard it in my head and love it. Have two friends with Alice though so might be weird.

Unless I have b/G twins Tallis and Torbian

foldingtable · 25/09/2018 16:35

Are the parents ageing librarians?

jadedgranger · 25/09/2018 16:34

Reminds me of the French company Thalys

GinIsIn · 25/09/2018 15:24

Thomas Tallis here too. It's nice.

Dentista · 25/09/2018 13:53

It makes me think 'talis' which is the domain name of the website that my former university used for reading lists.

But I don't imagine that's a common association.
