The car was named after Mercedes, not the other way round
I quite like Alaska. Also like Asia.

It's irrelevant if you've got a 'strong personal connection to a place'.
I've got a strong, personal connection to various locales, but I wouldn't name a child after them.

I like Saskia, but I think Alaska is a little weird. Plus it just makes me think of Sarah Palin and 'I can see Russia from my house'.

Unless you have some really strong personal connection to the place?
