I don't mind it as a name, but the colonial associations of Kipling would put me off. There are better Rudy names - Rudolph/Rudolf.

It wasn't even Kipling's first name; it was a middle name, given to him to commemorate a special place for his parents, so not even a 'proper' name.

Rogers who have a lot to answer for too, and Oliver's and Marks... ya get my drift

Of course, but there has only been one famous Rudyard, so the name will always be inextricably linked to Kipling.

No. As PPs have said it's absolutely linked to Kipling as it wasn't a name before him and there's too much colonialism etc tied in with it. Secondly a Rudy will get bullied because of his name.

Kipling's parents named him after a lake where they met. It's in Staffordshire.

Well going against the crowd here OP but I kinda like it! Wasn't aware of the Colonialist overtones bough which may have put me off. But then again there's probably some Rogers who have a lot to answer for too, and Oliver's and Marks... ya get my drift.

I wouldn’t call it a hatred of colonial history, just an awareness that the UK’s colonial history and attitudes are shameful.

I love it.

But given the hatred for colonial history at the moment, it could be a tough one to land a kid with, with the Kipling connotation. Brilliant writer though he was.

It’s actually quite a nice name but I wouldn’t call my child after a racist.
