Girl version of Richard help!

Hi there so I had my first we girl 2017 and named her after my granda his name was George so my daughter is called Georgia.

I’m now pregnant with my 2nd girl and I would like a female version of Richard as my dad is Richard.

Any ideas?? Thanks 😀

Hannah is a really lovely name - glad you all think so too.

Just out of interest, I wonder why there aren't any default standard female names that have subsequently been given male alternatives (yes, I know, I can probably guess why)?

Hannah is really pretty. If I were to give you feminine versions of Richard, I might have suggested Risha (REE-shah) and Ritsa (REET-sah), but neither pair well with Hannah. Gladly you found a name you all love.

Am I imagining it, or was there a thread some months ago which provided quite widespread mirth(!) - where a mum's baby girl was mistaken for/assumed to be a boy by a stranger, who asked what 'his' name was and, not wanting to cause the stranger any embarrassment, the mum instantly blurted out "Richard!" ?!?!

Why do they have to be named after their grandmothers just cos their female?

They absolutely don't, but I was just thinking that, assuming you don't name a child after all four of his/her grandparents, an obvious way of avoiding causing any potential offence if planning to name an as-yet-unborn baby after grandparents would be to use the grandmas' names if a girl or granddads' names if a boy.

Some may be disappointed or still grumble in the case of a certain in-law's grandmother when her twin grandsons were each given one of his granddads first names as a middle name but it seems a fair way of letting nature decide so that nobody can reasonably take umbrage at not being 'honoured'.

That said, however, the OP has subsequently responded with her good reasons for thinking as she did (not that she had to do so at all, of course!) so my question was moot in this case.

my dad, my partner, me and most of the family like Hannah.

As I’ve said before Richard is not a girly name but I was only playing about and wanted to see if anyone could think of something I do like a few but partner says no lol cause they are a bit out there! Thanks anyway guys

How about Aurora? Means goddess of Dawn? She could be Rory as a nickname and then you get the R name to honour your Dad?

This might be a tricky one but how about getting your Dad to suggest some names for her so he gets to say he had a part in naming her? I’m well aware that this could be quite difficult if he was thrilled and announced that he wanted to name her Bertha or Murgatroyd (apols to all Berthas and Murgatroyds). Maybe he could give you a list?

Mind you, my Dad would come out with some right strange suggestions so maybe it’s a bit of a bad idea Grin

Diana, that's a great idea. My son has my great grandfather's surname as his middle name as he was a pretty amazing man but had no boys to carry on the name. My grandmother was so pleased.

In Scotland you’d give his surname as a middle name, so many women have a man’s name/unisex/surname as a middle name. Would that be an option?

What about Alba for Dawn?

I really like Margaret, Greta, Maggie, Magaly, Daisy, they're all lovely.

I like Richard for a boy but it doesn't work for a girl. if you were Italian Riccarda might be less odd, but still a bit clunky really.

I would choose a different first name and use Richard as a middle name. I have my grandfather's name as my middle name and I've always liked it!

Honestly, I would wouldn't lumber a girl with the female version of Richard. They are all awful. Just give her her own name.

I know a Richa (pronounced Risha). She's Jewish though, so I think it might be a very Jewish name and possibly a bit of an odd choice if you're not Jewish. But it's a lovely name!
