Please knock some sense into me

I’ve posted before about a name for DS but nothing seems right. Anyway DH suggested Alan as a joke, and I actually like it!. I’m a big fan of names that everyone knows but just aren’t used anymore, is Alan acceptable? And if it isn’t are there any similar names that are acceptable?

I prefer Andrew to Alan, and it's really cool to be called Drew as a teen. I don't think 'Al' will ever sound cool.

My husband is Italian and he has an obsession with the name Barry! He thinks all Barrys are nice and it's a lovely name haha. I can't get my head around a baby Barry at all haha. I actually like Alan though 😀

There are quite a few Polish boys around called Alan- I like the name.

Alan Douglas is great IMO.

I do like family names for middlenames though is there anything from either grandparents ?

I also love Colin as a name I didn't grow up in the UK so do not have the connections others have or it. Additionally all the Colins I have met have been utterly delightful people helping my " liking" the name.

@GreatDuckCookery Ds age 16 has spend year 7 -10 with a Jason in his year. So not too far out that a Darren would be there too. In the case of the Jason we know I know he is named after a uncle who passed away however I don't mind it as a name.

What middle names are good with Alan?. We like Douglas but not sure if it goes with it. We have a one syllable last name and pretty much everything goes with it

I like it. It's not just a 60s/70s name. My great uncle Alan, whom I never met, was an RAF pilot.

There was a super cool but in my school called Alan. In fact at my school, which had lots of indie kids, the less cool your name was the more cool your name was!

DD has a less common but classic girls name which was super popular in the 70s. There were a few raised eyebrows and she sticks out a bit in a class of Ellas and Tillys but I like it. And it brings back nice memories for me as a 70s child.

I like Ali as a nickname by the way.

Like Jason, Nigel or Darren won't.

There's two Jasons and a Darren in DS(12)'s sports club.

Alyn or Alain are good as well.

I don't see why not. Also names like Dennis and Jason have already gained in popularity in the last decade or so judging from our recent intake of year 7s....makes a change from the never-ending parade of Toms, Henrys and Joes so I like it!
